Banned Books Week Day Seven: Today’s book is “All the Pretty Horses” by Cormac McCarthy, banned across thr U.S. for violent and sexual content. And here I thought it would be because McCarthy doesn’t use proper punctuation. This book was left in Little Free Library Charter No. 66514.

Banned Books Week 5: “How to be Ace” by Rebecca Burgess, banned by by school admins in Missouri out of fear that it might violate SB 775, which established criminal penalties for providing “explicit sexual material” to students. Apparently none of those admins know what “asexual” means.

Banned Books Week 4: “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. Banned for daring to challenge religious authority and describing a hedonistic society with no “traditional family values.” It is also criticized for insensitivity toward indigenous people (said criticism is justified but banning isn’t).

Many of the most frequently banned books share stories of young girls enduring sexual trauma. At a time in which women still struggle to come forward and achieve justice in the face of violence, these stories couldn’t be more important. Meredith writes in honor of Banned Book Week:

Banned Books Week 3: “Red: A Crayon’s Story” by Michael Hall. Banned in various districts across the U.S. including Charlotte-Mecklenberg Schools (Charlotte WTF) because they consider it to be about gender nonconformity. This book was left in a little free library by Whipporwill Park in Durham.

One of the big cases on the Court’s docket is a challenge to a state law banning AR-15s and other semiautomatic rifles. As the states and advocacy organizations defending these laws have noted, AR-15s and other semiautomatic rifles are often the weapon of choice for mass shooters. More here:

Next on the Docket: Dismantling Democracy

The Supreme Court is enabling Trump’s corruption while also doing the kind of institutional damage that will long outlast him.
