In the current edition of Madrono, Martha Lizeth Cecena Sanchez et al, described and illustrated a new species for the flora of Guadalupe Island, Mexico. Arctostaphylos, or Manzanitas, is a taxonomically complex genus of ~62 species and 107 total minimum-rank taxa in the heath family, or Ericaceae.

In this Noteworthy Collections of Madrono, Rikke Næborg and Cameron Williams found Abrothallus welwitschii and its host Sticta limbata within a diverse and abundant non-vascular epiphyte community in groves of Quercus tomentella (look at the first slide)!

The Merced Vernal Pool & Grassland Reserve is the 39th in the UC Nature. Adopted in 2013, this 6,500-acre reserve is home to some of the most intact, threatened Vernal Pool wetland habitat in California! During our Banquet, participants were given a tour and learned the biodiversity within them!
One of our lovely field trips was held by Peter, an PhD student at UC Merced! During the fieldtrip, he showed us the different botanical spots around the UC Merced Campus!
“Soil is the ecological interface between life and geology….” Using 53,000 herbarium voucher records, Emma Fryer et al. evaluated each taxon’s affinity and endemism to clay soils and found evidence for endemism to clay soils in California flora.

In a previous edition of Madroño, Eva G Buxton would submit a paper about a new taxon, Leptosiphon ramosissimus occuring in Marin County Ultimately, it was determined that the morphological, ecological, and typically phenological differences demonstrate that L. ramosissimus merits specific status.
