Nothing in Saregnar scales to your character. A dangerous road is dangerous the day you start the game, and it stays that way until you're strong enough to walk it.

Tavern Hour. A traveler has been at the Yew Tree since noon waiting for Tom to get back from Avanmoor, and has worked his way through most of what Dina has open. The Yew Tree Inn by Tony Manfredonia open.spotify.com/track/2Q80Al...
Every character in Call of Saregnar begins as a real person on a greenscreen and gets turned, frame by frame, into a sprite. Friends, family, some very patient volunteers. If an innkeeper looks like she's judging you, somebody real made that face.
Every house in Merrentar keeps a way in for the dead. In a farmhouse it's the smokehole in the roof, and in a rich man's house a small carved door above the entrance, set too high for any living foot to use.
Well, after a decade of development, all the standard Unity assets are gone. Everything is custom now.

Tavern Hour. Dina's kept the door propped against the heat all week, and the moths have moved in around the lamps. The Yew Tree Inn by Tony Manfredonia open.spotify.com/track/2Q80Al...
A game has to be a place before it's a system. Saregnar is an ordinary medieval world, farms, inns, forests, placed by hand. Monsters and magic are rare and live at the far edges of the map. Most of what you hear about them gets told over some ale at the inn.
Halvin keeps the good steel in the back at Vragan's Will and shows you the serviceable blades first. Ask for better and he will size you up before fetching the finer items.
Spending a few months building tools instead of the actual game felt indulgent while I was doing it. Then the road editor turned what used to be a day's work into an hour, so...
Hans Sandar runs his sword lessons in front of the temple in Avanmoor, under the great oak, at first light before the heat sets in. The same three boys turn up every morning to watch, none of them with the coin for a lesson of their own.
That's Neal Hallford (@nealhallford.bsky.social), who wrote and co-authored Betrayal at Krondor, signing my old BaK box in a restaurant in Venice. That 1993 game is the whole reason Call of Saregnar exists, and Neal's the one who first called mine a BAK-alike.
Tavern Hour. They're getting the hay in around Romar, and the Yew Tree fills late with men who still have grass in their hair and no wish to do anything but sit. The Yew Tree Inn by Tony Manfredonia open.spotify.com/track/2Q80Al...
Call of Saregnar is inspired by a 1993 RPG, built with photographed actors, and funded by patrons. As for marketing, I post about an innkeeper named Dina.
I've spent a while making saves harder to lose. A save now writes to a temp file and only replaces the real one when it's done, so a crash halfway through can't ruin your file. New devlog up for patrons: www.patreon.com/CallOfSaregn...
The Avanmoor weather reader called for a dry spell this Evenostine and got one. Farmers listen hardest around harvest, since a crop that fails on a good forecast pays no tax to the landlord that year.
Itane is readying for Onoptulis's Tribute, when the village asks the water goddess to keep the stream high and the vines fed through the dry months. Lord Bertrand has been especially vocal that last year’s draught is not to be repeated this year.
Every Call of Saregnar devlog goes public on Patreon a month after the patrons get it. If you just want to read along, following is free. www.patreon.com/CallOfSaregnar
Tavern Hour. Past supper the light still holds, so Dina leaves the Yew Tree's candles unlit and pours the first rounds by what comes through the window. The Yew Tree Inn by Tony Manfredonia open.spotify.com/track/2Q80Al...
I built the tool that makes rivers flow a few weeks back, mainly to speed up development. The downside is that now I lose a few minutes watching them run every time I open that part of the level. 😅
What’s a game you never felt like rushing, the one you were happy just to be in? Saregnar sits firmly in that family, so I’d like to meet its relatives.
The Ergendon pig comes to the table half baked inside a loaf, and half streamed, stuffed with small birds and shellfish. Not exactly your everyday porridge, although some say they would prefer porridge to that delicacy.
The latest texture haul, this time from vacation on the Croatian coast. Old doorways, stonework, and what the sea's been doing to the rock for the last few hundred years. Most of these will end up somewhere in the game.
Somebody left fresh light bread at the foot of the pilgrim's column on the Avanmoor road, the wheat kind, not the oats most folk make do with.
My asset pipeline is a pair of hiking boots and a camera. The road textures in the game come from photos of roads I walked, which means somewhere out there a confused hiker has watched me spend an unhealthy amount of time apparently photographing my feet.
Tavern Hour. The morning after Fire Night, and the Yew Tree's near empty, half the regulars still up the hill sleeping it off in the dew. The Yew Tree Inn by Tony Manfredonia open.spotify.com/track/2Q80Al...
A merchant came through Romar swearing he had a cask of Solevar red, the wine that's meant to go nowhere but the King's table. Dina poured him a cup of the white and let him keep talking.
Rivers in Call of Saregnar finally flow. Instead of hand-placing and angling water tiles, I drop a path and the new river tool bakes one continuous flowing surface, no seams. Full devlog up for patrons now: www.patreon.com/CallOfSaregn...
Devlog #172 - A new river system | Call Of Saregnar
Greetings Saregnarians, I've wanted proper rivers in this game for a long time, and I finally built a system for them right inside Unity. Yo

Emmalyn's apothecary smells of whatever she dried last, and this week it's something out of the river gorge that's supposed to help you sleep, though Halvin two doors down says it just keeps him up.
Tavern Hour. The long evenings have Dina propping the door open for the breeze, and half of Romar drifts in for one drink, or two. The Yew Tree Inn by Tony Manfredonia open.spotify.com/track/2Q80Al...
The Keepers at Suvith won't let you into the back room without a lamp they hand you themselves, on the reasoning that one careless candle is all it takes to lose a few hundred years of somebody's writing.
