Proudly Labour's MP for Leyton and Wanstead.🌹Minister for Veterans and People. Wing Commander (Rtrd).

At Remembrance it's normal to see people wearing medals – our veterans, and sometimes family members too. But many people don't understand the rules about this, leading to concerns about inadvertent disrespect. 🎖️ Let’s change that and give people the confidence to honour their family’s service 👇

Parliament's Constituency Garden of Remembrance brings together tributes from across the UK. Yesterday I was honoured to place a cross on behalf of Leyton and Wanstead, remembering all who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We will remember them. 🙏

Our Armed Forces personnel give so much in service to our country. When they leave service, accessing support should be simple. That's why I was pleased to highlight investment in new VALOUR veteran support centres yesterday, with more locations to be announced soon. 👇

A whirlwind few days at Labour Conference! Catching up with brilliant colleagues and veterans’ organisations, inc. Fighting With Pride, Help for Heroes, Stonewater, and international friends- too many inspiring conversations to count! 🌹🌈

Reflecting on the PM’s powerful speech: we now have a path forward on Britain’s great challenges – social care, the erosion of public control over the basics of life, and the damage from Brexit. Equally important is the unifying sense of what we’re fighting for: hope again. ❤️👇

🚨Update on Wanstead High School development: This morning I met with the Head of Redbridge Council to raise the ongoing disruptions at Wanstead High School. I will keep up the pressure and keep you updated on progress. 👇

With Cllr Jo Blackman, I’ve written to the Environment Agency and Thames Water over chronic illegal discharges into the River Roding. Recent days have seen a marked, visible worsening, with residents being warned not to enter the water. 👇 1/2

Today I just wanted to share a quick message on the recent discussion about the homophobia faced by my colleague Wes Streeting following his appointment to the MoD. Not only is this deeply disappointing but it simply bears no reflection on the reality of our incredible and diverse Armed Forces.

Lovely to catch up with Eddy Smythe at a celebration of the Tapestry of Black Britons, which commemorates Black British service people who fought in WW2. This includes Eddy’s father Johnny, who served in the RAF and endured 18 months in a POW camp after being shot down defending Britain.

Schools should be safe places where children can learn and thrive, but parents are rightly concerned about classrooms becoming too hot during heatwaves. I've met with local schools and councils to push for practical solutions, including cooling systems, more shade and greener school spaces. 👇

Andy Burnham’s first announcement, to remove VAT from electricity, will make a real difference to the cost of living for people in Leyton and Wanstead. 🏡💷 It shows this Labour Government's commitment to reducing the cost of living. 👇

It is an honour to be reappointed Minister for Veterans and People by our new Prime Minister, and to form part of Wes Streeting’s new team as Defence Secretary. I will continue to give my all in service to those who sacrifice in our defence – servicepeople, families, and veterans. 🧵1/3

So valuable to join the Deputy PM's roundtable on the disproportionate impacts of prostate cancer on Black men. My final act as Chair of the Prostate Cancer APPG, following my appointment to the government - I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have led this work. 💙

Collaboration is key to making the Armed Forces Covenant a lived reality for our Armed Forces community across the UK. Great to meet the Veteran Commissioners from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland this week, alongside Nick Pope (Cobseo), and Armed Forces Commissioner Perkins. 👇

It tells you everything you need to know about Kemi Badneoch and Nigel Farage that as London schools, hospitals and transport networks all buckle under extreme record-breaking temperatures, they gather with fossil fuel lobbyists, climate deniers and the far-right to demand an end to Net Zero

Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch are both scheduled to address the event, reports Max Colbert

Happy Reserves Day all! Our reservists bring expertise from all walks of life, balancing civilian careers with a commitment to protect our country. Awesome example of that dual role: RAF reservists piloting an easyJet flight today. 👇

A privilege to attend my first Armed Forces Week celebrations as Minister for Veterans and People this weekend in Coleraine, Northern Ireland - a real opportunity to thank the remarkable people who serve our country. I’m grateful to everyone who came out to mark the occasion. 🙏

Today is Windrush Day. In 1948, the HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury. A third of those on board were ex-RAF, returning after WWII. The Windrush Generation helped rebuild Britain and shaped its future. Today we honour their legacy and thank those who paved the way. 🙏

The attack in Edinburgh was appalling; we must recognise the pattern as well as dealing with the perpetrator. Islamophobia and anti‑Muslim hatred have been steadily normalised. Our national security requires us to challenge EVERY form of divisive racist rhetoric fuelling violence on our streets.

Two people were injured close to a mosque and a man was later seen battering the door of a pizzeria as members of the public run away.
