How do desert ants navigate a relatively featureless landscape? @cataglyphilosophy.bsky.social kicked off the #ICN2026 symposium on Insect Compass Systems with research on desert ant magnetoreception which helps them find their way!
Yesterday was the official kick-off meeting of the booster units of the University of Oldenburg where we presebted our #AnHuNav project ↘️ www.uol.de/anhunav ↙️ 🐏🐐🫏🐪🕊🏛🧭🗺 It was a pleasure to meet all other members and to discuss about #interdisciplinarity and related advantages, challenges and needs 🤩
In addition to all the cool #neuroscience input 🧠🧪, we were fed with amazing food 😋 and had guided through the campus in Dahlem to learn more about the last 100 years of science in the "German Oxford". Thanks to @mpinb.mpg.de and @maxplanck.de for making it possible 🙏
Thanks to @sepikeshavarzi.bsky.social, @petrznam.bsky.social and Jason Kerr for a fantastic conference in Berlin! I am still filled with joy about the discussions and processing all new facts about how animals (species diverse as 🐀🐵🐳🐬🐟🦋🐜🪰🐦🦅) sense the world around them while moving through it 🧠🧭🗺

We had a wonderful time at the 3rd Senses in Motion Conference, with so many exciting talks, posters, and discussions. A big thank you to all the participants, our funders — @maxplanck.de and @mpinb.mpg.de — and my fellow co-organisers, @petrznam.bsky.social and Jason Kerr. sensesinmotion.org
✨️The RIN conference on Animal Navigation was great! My highlights: 🏅Neurobiology session including a talk by nobel laureate John O'Keefe and that @katejj.bsky.social advertised the navigation challenges book 🏅Introducing my team to the community, meeting old friends & new people 🏅London at night 🤩
28 months later: In December 2024, I participated in the Ernst Strüngmann Forum on #Navigation #Research 🧭🧪 Now the book has been published including our chapter of group 2 ("team zoo" 🦠🐜🐦🦞🐒🦍🐢🤖) on the "Universal Principles of Navigation across Species and Spatial Scales" ↘️ doi.org/10.1007/978-... ↙️
✨️💜 Women's power 💜✨️ At today's @sfb1372.bsky.social meeting we had discussion on #diversity #equity and #inclusion and are solidary with #WomensStrikeDay #OhneUnsStehtAllesStill #WomenInSTEM 💜👩🔬🧪🙎♀️💜
🐜 Super interesting & important @pnas.org study by @mpi-ce.bsky.social research team @yukoulrich.bsky.social revealing how complex the consequences of pollutants can be 😱 I was asked for my opinion about the study for @trouw.nl. A friend living in Amsterdam just sent me a copy of the newspaper 📰🥰
Air pollution isn’t just bad for us—tiny increases in ozone can scramble ants’ chemical signals, making them misidentify nestmates and unraveling their social order. 😮🪲 In Smithsonian Magazine: https://ow.ly/jYcx50Yh6vI In PNAS: https://ow.ly/EW2T50Yh6r4
Today we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science by highlighting the incredible women of SFB 1372 advancing our understanding of birds, behaviour, and the natural world 🐦🔬 A small glimpse of the brilliant minds behind our research ⬇️ ##WomenInScience

Such a cool study with surprise result 🤯 The #bird #retina works under anoxic conditions 👀 🐦 Check out the paper with in @nature.com ⬇️ And watch the supercool video of @sfb1372.bsky.social 🎞
#Birds can see without #oxygen. At least part of their retina does. A new @nature.com study of scientists from @au.dk with #SFB1372 contribution shows that the avian inner #retina functions under chronic anoxia, supported by anaerobic metabolism and the #pecten. 🐔👁️ doi.org/10.1038/s41586-025-09978-w
Back home & filled with great memories of my Australia field trip🌏🇦🇺 Thanks to Eric Warrant & team @lundvision.bsky.social for hosting me & the chance for becoming a temporary moth-researcher #KonishiAward @neuroethology.org to study #magnetoreception & #navigation in the spectacular #Bogong moth🧭✨🦋
And I think, I have a found first christmas present for my kids 😍🎁🐦🧭🧪📖 Such a cool project by a @sfb1372.bsky.social team around @genmig.bsky.social from the @ifv-whv.bsky.social and with amazing illustrations by @co-la.bsky.social transferring research results in a children book 😱🥰 Check it out 👇
coffee breaks inspire the coolest things, no? It certainly inspired this wonderful project – a kids book on a robin that takes you under its wing on its journey to their wintering grounds. gorgeously illustrated @co-la.bsky.social and beautifully written by a #dreamteam within @sfb1372.bsky.social
The history of escalation of the #honeybee #odometer controversy in the @neuroethology.org research community can now be tracked in this collection of @springernature.com #JCP-A 🧪🧠🐝 I highly recommend reading Eric Warrant's editorial @lundvision.bsky.social and the follow-up replies ⬇️
