Hummingbird hawkmoths show a form of "handedness": #UniKonstanz @cbehav.bsky.social researchers found that they preferentially place their proboscis on one side when searching for nectar. Full story: t1p.de/v09qd @insect-vision.bsky.social @anna-stoeckl.bsky.social @lochlanw.bsky.social

New Study! @cbehav.bsky.social @mpi-animalbehav.bsky.social Often foraging models assume that the forager knows the environment and proceed to predict decision strategies but how does the foraging learn the structure of the environment ? A new preprint delves into this question
🚨New preprint doi.org/10.64898/2026.06.07.730682. We show that zebrafish larvae exhibit complex, internally generated, spontaneous behavioral patterns in the absence of stimuli. These dynamics can be described by a simple Markov process with transition probabilities that change over time.
We are excited to share our collaboration with @pheereynolds.bsky.social, Robert Hindges & team on retinal plasticity, now out in Neuron! This work shows how visual experience during early development changes the anatomical and functional properties of amacrine cells and ultimately behavior!
Early visual experience elicits cellular and functional plasticity in the retina and alters behavior
The understanding of experience-dependent plasticity in the vertebrate retina is largely incomplete. Reynolds et al. discovered that raising animals in differently patterned visual environments change...

The SonoRo robot platform in action at #ANTS2026. Individual robots find/repel each other and show flocking using only their acoustic beacons. This is much like many animal/insect groups. Here we show even simple rules and coarse sensory capabilities give rise to collective behaviour. 1/N
Accepted at #OCEANS2026 🚀 Our paper, BIND-USBL: Bounding IMU Navigation Drift using USBL in Heterogeneous ASV–AUV Teams, at OCEANS 2026 China. Very glad to have also received a travel grant. Work with Rajini Makam, @swarmdynamics.bsky.social and Suresh Sundaram Link: arxiv.org/abs/2604.11861

New paper out: www.cell.com/iscience/ful... Congratulations to our former PhD student @maxcapelle.bsky.social whose work reveals that the switch in light preference across zebrafish development is driven by a reweighting of three parallel visual processing pathways. Check out a short summary below!
We are proud to have @maxcapelle.bsky.social's paper out on bioRxiv! He found that phototactic behavior in #zebrafish switches during #ontogeny🐟🔆 Through elegant behavioral dissections, he identifies the navigational strategies related to this transition. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Thread 👇
You’ve seen the science of #CBehav, now see the vibe! 🎬✨ One of our brilliant students put together this incredible video using moments from the course. Turn the volume up for this one! 🎶🕺💃👇 www.instagram.com/reel/DZm8hz4... @cbehav.bsky.social @livingingroups.bsky.social @asab.org

It’s sad to say goodbye. This group bonded so quickly and made this course unforgettable. 🥹❤️ We can't wait to cross paths again. Thank you to everyone who helped to make #CBehav 2026 such a massive success! @cbehav.bsky.social @asab.org @britishecologicalsociety.org @livingingroups.bsky.social
Together with Daniel Münch @dahaniel.muench.bio, we contributed a review about complex neural processing across phyla - and how this allows adaptions to a dynamic environment. Enjoy reading!

To close out the day Jack Winans gave an incredible guest talk about his work with baboons in Amboseli. 🐒🇰🇪
Day 6 of #CBehav! 🏜️ Yes, we skipped the Day 5 post, but we have a valid excuse. Got invited to a Party by the amazing crew here at the KRC and got back way too late for social media. 🥳🍻
Finished things off the only proper way you can out here: driving out for sundowners on the legendary Dune to Nowhere. 🌅🍷 Not a bad way to end the weekend! 🌌✨
Already looking forward to tomorrow for exciting animal encounters! 🐾🏜️ @cbehav.bsky.social @livingingroups.bsky.social @asab.org @britishecologicalsociety.org
Day 4 of #CBehav! 🏜️ Woke up super early to start the morning in the field observing the social dynamics of Cape ground squirrel groups. 🐿️📊
With the newly acquired skills we headed right out into the field to deploy camera traps and Passive Acoustic Monitors (PAMs). 🛰️🕵️♂️
Day 3 of #CBehav kicked off with animal communication theory, followed by students heading out into the field to practice recording audio! 📻🎙️
First day of the course 🏜️ was all about fieldwork essentials: radio comms, GPS navigation, and radio telemetry tracking.
Researchers at the #UniKonstanz @cbehav.bsky.social are investigating a mysterious “stop signal” in bees — a behaviour only rarely observed until now. By combining expertise across disciplines, they aim to uncover how tiny signals shape collective behaviour in the hive. ➡️https://t1p.de/mbj0z
Have a great time at the Kalahari Research Centre, all of you! We are excited to hear all the great stories and pictures in the next days.
The journey begins! 🚍 This bus is officially on standby to take the students to the Kalahari Research Centre 🇿🇦 for the @cbehav.bsky.social field course 🌅🐀🐦⬛🦛🦋 Make sure to watch this space, we’ll be posting updates and photos from the field! 📷✨
