Remaking 1901 by Phoenix to Learn Why It’s So Good

I rebuilt 1901 by Phoenix from scratch to figure out what makes it so good. My Keyboard: https://novationmusic.com/launchkey?utm_source=media-partner&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=MK_CMP_LAUNCHKEYMK4_Sustaining&utm_content=video&utm_term=EgoDip Phoenix built 1901 out of a handful of parts that all lock together so tightly you can't change one without changing all of them. In this video I rebuild the whole song from the ground up — the gritty unison synth bass, the soft guitar it rubs against, the ghostly bell buried in the intro, the hybrid live-sampled drums programmed by hand — and take apart what each piece is doing, all the way to the one moment in the chorus I really wanted to get to. Along the way: why the bass hits on the upbeat instead of the downbeat, why the verse drops that bass note down from the F to the D (and why every other instrument had to follow), the snare pushed forward an eighth note that keeps you permanently off balance, and the compression-and-release trick in the chorus that makes it feel like a box shrinking around you until it breaks open. Also, I've been mishearing the last line of this song for years. Leave a comment with anything you know about 1901 that I missed — or whatever this song reminds you of. I started rewatching The Expanse (and rereading the books, I'm one book ahead). I forgot this was, at the time, the best sci fi TV since the Battlestar reboot.

It's been raining for almost 24 hours and will likely continue for another 6-7. So, off to do a 4 hour trainer ride like there's 2' of snow outside.

I own 4 movie soundtracks: Top Gun, Star Wars Episode I, Lost in Translation, and Garden State. All where the music or score are essential parts of the movie. The last two are full of 90s and early 00s indie bangers.

After a lengthy review process, our piece on the demand for technical/analytical skills in urban planning in the US is out! We find modest, though growing, demand for more advanced technical skills and the centrality of “core” technical skills journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Learning to Code? Technical Skills in the Planning Job Market - Jamaal Green, Camille Barchers, Henry Renski, 2026

It is widely believed that planning employers increasingly seek “data science” skills. We analyze more than 16,000 job ads posted to the American Planning Assoc...

The longer I do this gig, the more I think that conferences with fixed locations (in large, relatively cheap, easy to get to cities) are the way to go. When conferences cost $3k+, all we’re doing is replicating the inequality already baked into the university system.
