To be even more clear: if, as tenured/senior academic, you do not do this now and in the coming years (trying to change the incentive structure and enable the "go and think big" researcher for junior researchers), in my book you are failing as an advisor and mentor.

Some initial thoughts, and a complicated mix of feelings. Wow. I mean, Erdos problems are cool (I genuinely mean that), I didn't know about the Jacobian conjecture before it got disproved. But this newest batch from OpenAI hits home in a way the previous announcements did not.

"We're all worried," as what it means to do research (in my field, Theoretical CS) seems to be shifting, and shifting fast. What to do? Senior researchers must lead by example, knowing that not everything will pan out. What I'm suggesting below may not work everywhere, but here's my own advice: 1/

The ARC has released their new set of grant schemes ▶️ www.arc.gov.au/news-and-pub... Before implementing them, they’re now going to “consult with the sector”. Hopefully genuinely, not just with a few disengaged DVCRs. In the meantime, there’ll be another round of Discovery Projects (DP28).

Spent the day at an event mapping out Quantum Physics, Engineering, and Computing research at #USyd. Seeing so many people engaged and eager to collaborate, I feel energized and optimistic: there is a lot of good stuff to be done, and a lot of will to do so!

Saw the latest blog post by Bill Gasarch on @lance.fortnow.com's blog, and I need to get it out of my system: this is not "the obvious thing." This isn't insightful. This is, from a senior and respected member of our community, plainly disappointing. A ouija board w/ a varnish of misunderstood tech.

I wondered whether Paul Erdos would be happy with how it turned out. So I did the obvious thing: I asked Google AI

       Would Erdos have liked the solution to the sum-product conjecture?
