The story of an unambitious, scholarly sixth prince of the southern kingdom and a vengeful assassin from the north, whose chance reunion sets off a heartwrenching tale of tension, connection, love, and intrigue.

There's truly a little bit of everything you could ask for in a historical drama here: breathtakingly gorgeous costuming and set design, childhood friends to lovers/enemies/secret third things (not just between our main couple!), grounded, understandable motives, well-executed fights, a grippingly evocative score, incredible chemistry and even some classic romantic sequences that are genuinely moving to see between two male leads. That's not to say it's lacking in cryptic glances and unspoken feelings to analyze, there's still plenty of that to contemplate too! Finally, don't let the bittersweet ending intimidate you- it serves the story well and is undeniably beautiful to watch the whole way through. I won't spoil the plot any further, as I think the twists and turns are most enjoyable to experience firsthand!

It's a concise, unwavering narrative of the conflicts between devotion and obligation, and in my opinion quite masterful in its execution. At only 12 short episodes, my only true critique is that I wish we had more time with these characters- not that they require any more depth but just to live in that world with them a little longer. But, it does make rewatching a much less time-consuming proposal than the usual, so I don't hold that against it too much! - @crow-n-prince

'Ancient Costume' is a broad categorization of Chinese dramas that encompass everything from political intrigue palace dramas to epic world-bending fantasy to martial arts extravaganzas.

Shows like The Untamed, Nirvana in Fire, and Love Between Fairy and Devil have made some waves in the West, but overall these dramas remain extremely underappreciated and under-seen. We'd love to help change that.

Whether you are a fan of ancient costume dramas already or are looking for an introduction to them, this panel is for you. We will be discussing the terminology, history, and inspirations behind modern costume dramas, where to watch them, and, of course, recommending some of our favorites.

We'll also delve a little bit into their influence on anime, as well as anime's influence on them. If you love beautiful men with long flowing locks, powerful and complex women, epic revenge plots, love stories that defy fate, lush costumes and sets, and a whole lot of cool fight scenes, you'll love Chinese ancient costume dramas, so come check out our panel!

I'm so excited we got approved to do this panel. I was hesitant to apply for this panel at such a huge anime convention since it's... not anime, but upon looking at last year's schedule and seeing several panels for non-Japanese media, I decided to give it a shot. This panel has been improved and updated since the first time we ran it, so we're hoping it's even better this time around.

I have some prizes to give out to those who can answer a few trivia questions, as well as something special to anyone interested in ordering @cdramazine 👀

First, Parallel World has some of the most novel worldbuilding I've seen from a fantasy/sci-fi show in a while, and the blend of modern/ancient/fantasy is one of my favorite parts about it! This and the desert setting gives the show a very unique aesthetic. It also has great characters!! An in-their-30s-and-act-like-it FL and ML who fall in love without any of the usual annoying het romance nonsense. They develop a relationship learning to trust each other and actually communicating lol. The FL is tough and standoffish and learns to be emotionally vulnerable. The ML is also strong, and is also gentle and caring, and finds himself falling in love again after the death of his fiance (there's no "first and only true love" BS here! And no jealousy from the FL! She helps him grieve). And of course there's an epic prophecy about the FL and a plot that actually gets wrapped up nicely for cdrama standards. I could go on for ages. It holds such a special place in my heart <3

But don't let the stabby bloodthirsty assassins fool you; Blood River is a show about love at it's core. It's about familial love, platonic love, secret-third-thing loves.

I didn’t expect to fall as hard and for as long for this crime show, but here we are, in large part due to the unique focus on the profession of the sketch artist. The show is very prettily shot, with a lot of art (the art department clearly had a ball with this show) and themes around art, as well as cases that stay with you. Some of them are grim in subject matter, but the show itself has a core of compassion and empathy, embodied through Shen Yi – the seemingly out of place yet brilliant addition to the crime solving team – and his engagement with perpetrators and victims alike. The first season also has a gripping arc connecting events from seven years ago which led to Shen Yi giving up his career as an artist to the ‘current’ time, which also involves the police captain Du Cheng. The development of their personal relationship from blame to drift compatible is particularly satisfying. The show strikes a very neat balance between case-driven and character-driven, which I like.

The Spirealm (adapted from danmei novel KoD) is a technically (technically) censored, horror (lite) drama that knows no limits on how much yearning they can pack into their two leads gazes. Extremely underrated drama, partially because it was banned in the mainland and then released without being able to promote it about 8 months later to international audiences only.

Show takes the route of sweet, incredibly smart loser guy (affectionate) Ling JiuShi who starts playing a banned VR game and suddenly, his reality is no longer what it used to be. He’s entered the ‘World of Doors’: where dying inside before completing a Door causes you to die in real life. Inside he meets Ruan LanZhu- a witty, flirtatious, and well-dressed player who not only excels at playing the games but also is the pettiest man in television.

The Spirealm is about the horrors (both real and VR), about love and loss, and above all, choosing your reality. Plus! There's a fluffy cat named Li Zi. - @guoldu

The last time Ding Liu saw her, she couldn’t stop staring at the stump where her forearm used to be. Now, she can’t stop staring at the forearm that’s taken its place. Instead of asking all of the important things she wants to know about Gao Shen or A-He or even Li Jin’ao, what Ding Liu says is, “Xi-jie, your arm!”
