Art meets science Viborg Gymnasium has unveiled a stunning terrazzo floor created by Amalie Smith as part of the Levende jord (Living Soil) project. Created in collaboration with CeMiSt, Microflora Danica, Biotech Academy, and donated by Ny Carlsbergfondet. Beautiful. Educational. Interdisciplinary.

Created in collaboration with CeMiSt, Microflora Danica, Biotech Academy, and donated by Ny Carlsbergfondet, Living Soil also includes teaching material for high school level. Beautiful, educational, and interdisciplinary.The project includes a garden outside the library at Viborg Gymnasium, where teaching experiments can be conducted. The floor is not only a beautiful piece of public art, but also an interdisciplinary educational resource for Danish high school level students. The accompanying teaching materials use the artwork as a foundation for exploring soil microbiology, ecosystems, plant-microbe interactions, and sustainability — making the invisible visible in both artistic and scientific ways.A 1:10,000 scale depiction of the rhizosphere, complete with plant roots and microorganisms.

Associate Professor Detmer Sipkema from Wageningen University @w-u-r.bsky.social gave an interesting talk at CeMiSt last week: "The biosynthetic landscape of marine sponge microbiomes" elaborating on the ecological role of their metabolites in the sponge holobiont – absolutely fascinating! @dg.dk
