At the risk of destroying my mentions there's a really interesting pattern developing of Democratic Party leadership going all-in on absolutely terrible candidates and ending up with someone they really don't want as a result, rather than compromising on someone more acceptable to the electorate

With Rishi Sunak, Tories reached for the 'make our most popular guy PM' lever without thinking through the reasons for his popularity and whether they would carry across to no 10. Anyway no reason at all why this comes to mind.

I used to know a guy who would ostentatiously take a tiny drop of wine from his glass onto a napkin on the basis that the rule said that a drop of wine must not pass your lips, and look, that drop wasn't passing his lips, all good

Calling Andy Burnham King of the North is convenient for London media wanting a north-whisperer but it's gibberish. 1. Northerners hate each other. 2. Northerners disagree on what The North is. 3. If Burnham conflates Manchester with The North he'll have multiple peasants' revolts on his hands. 1/2

I don't think it was seen that way when Sunak did it because everyone knew that govt was on its way out and most people in it had had a decent chance at promotion but to do it with this ambitious new labour party after a govt that collapsed party because it promoted entirely by clique... Seems bold.

Ed Miliband is much more left wing than me and I therefore don't think I'd particularly like him as Chancellor but come off it, he's obviously not a threat to national security, that's just silly and when you try and argue it you just look silly too.

This is clearly valid but I also think we need to look at what people are being asked. They aren't being asked about various different options and what do they think. It's do you support a ban or do you think it's all fine those are the two options

One big problem I have with the ‘90% of parents is the consultation support the social media ban’ is once again queer teenagers especially are voiceless. In a cis straight world, even broadly supportive parents can’t fully represent their interests, let alone unsupportive ones.

The Defence Secretary resigned saying the PM couldn't keep the country safe and the entire govt is just sitting there as if nothing happened while they wait for a guy who's already tripping over his own feet to win a by-election. These are not serious people!

This would be a good argument if HMT and no 10 had set up a plan to fix it. Their refusal to do that is why the Defence Sec resigned and they need to own that.

Though you might argue HMT/No10 has dragged its feet and isn’t willing to spend enough it’s also worth remembering that deficiencies in Britain’s defence spending/capabilities did not start with this Labour govt- not that you’d know it listening to a lot of the commentary today.
