I saw an ecommerce order going out yesterday & thought I would love to see the bookshelves of the person these are going to!

Contentious opinion ... what do we think? Is it revisiting an old friend, conducting further research or wasting time that could be spent on reading something new?

I knew nothing about these journals when they emerged from Secondhand. Then I looked them up and found a small history of American intellectual life: Partisan Review, Salmagundi, Grand Street & Raritan - literature, politics, fiction, poetry and some very serious arguments. 1/2

Reading is inexpensive entertainment. Buying every book that catches your eye is a slightly different economic model, but the underlying principle remains sound ... at least that is what I keep telling myself 😊

Fourteen years this week since Maeve Binchy died. Gone but absolutely not forgotten. David has delivered a lovely little tribute: a signed 1987 Firefly Summer, a first edition and enough secrets, weddings and complicated families to populate a small Irish town. 1/2

Look at this! The Kitchenette Cook Book, inscribed in New York in May 1939: a cookbook for the professional woman with limited time, money & space. Cooking for One! Half-Hour Dinners! Emergency Shelves! But how did it get to Ireland? Secondhand books arrive carrying entire unsolved lives!

Wine was tasted, facts were learned and numbers were exchanged. Most useful lesson: Chablis is Chardonnay, but not every Chardonnay is Chablis. Also, some very impressive, expensive wines are simply not for you. Knowing this before ordering the bottle is priceless! 1/2

A posse of 26 vintage cowboy paperbacks has ridden into Chapters: mostly the classics of Louis L’Amour, J. T. Edson & Matt Chisholm! Battered spines. Magnificent covers. Horses, guns, mountains and men with absolutely no interest in talking through their feelings. 🤠📚
