Political theorist @ ASU. Researching cultural politics, political economy, everyday resistance, food politics, and contemplative politics. Author of The Art of Elastic Politics (Edinburgh, 2026) and Ingenious Citizenship (Duke, 2016).

Daoism and Chan (Zen) Buddhism have long approached worldly phenomena in nondualistic ways. Daoism conceives yin/yang, fortune/misfortune, or gain/loss as relational and interdependent, and Chan (Zen) Buddhism emphasizes the dharma gate of nonduality ("Not Two," or no fixed opposites).
If nonbinary articulates a spacious possibility in the realm of gender, it likewise reveals a broad spectrum of political possibilities beyond familiar binary oppositions.
