October's fossil of the month isn't just one fossil but a whole host of ammonites preserved against a chunk of fossilised driftwood from the Jurassic seafloor, 190 million years ago! Found by preparator and collector Craig Chivers in February 2024 after some stormy weather. #FossilFriday #paleosky
Our very own Ali Ferris is giving this talk in Lyme Regis today!
The deadline to enter the Children's Fossil Competition is midnight tonight! You can still see last year's winning fossils on display, they are leaving us today and making their way to the Lyme Regis Museum Entry requirements can be found here: charmouth.org/chcc/fossilc...
We are fossil hunting with St Georges Catholic School today. The weather is a little wild but all the more exciting for beach treasures! We have school slots available throughout this winter for fossil hunting, beach cleaning, investigating coastlines, outreach and virtual sessions!
Local fossil hunter Jake came across this modern sea urchin this weekend! The sea urchin shell would have been covered in spines and tiny tube feet when alive, for protection and to help it move & feed. We sometimes find sea urchins living in the rockpools around Lyme Regis. #MarineMonday
There is only 3 days left to enter The Children's Fossil Competition 2026! The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 30th September! All entry requirements can be found here: charmouth.org/chcc/fossilc...
It's days like these where we reckon we've got one of the best offices. It's been beautiful here in Charmouth, the perfect kind of day for going out on the beaches and looking for some Jurassic treasures.
We met PhD researcher Hamza back at the Fossil Festival this year so it was great seeing him drop by to visit the Centre this morning. Even better that he'd been out on the beach and discovered a pair of Hybodus shark teeth! #FossilFriday
We had a brilliant time on the beach today with the Year 3s of Mere School from Wiltshire! Congratulations on all those Jurassic belemnites and ammonites today guys!
1 WEEK TO GO! Don't forget to get those entires in! www.theetchescollection.org/fossilcomp Winning prizes include: a fossil walk from Charmouth heritage coast centre A family ticket for The Etches Collection and Lyme Regis museum And your fossils on display at all three locations!
A beautiful day out on the beach today, perfect for our fossil hunting walk earlier this morning with plenty of ammonite and belemnite finds! We've also added some extra spaces to the walks this weekend so if you want to join us be sure to book on now! charmouth.org/chcc/events-...
It's #MarineMonday and the results are in from the #greatbritishbeachclean and over 95% of the rubbish we collected in #Charmouth were small pieces of plastics. Results have been uploaded to the @mcsuk.bsky.social
Well done to the 36 volunteers who joined our beach clean! In addition to the usual culprits of small plastics and fishing rope, we had a very spiky section of seagull roofing deterrent. All rubbish was sorted and recorded for @mcsuk.bsky.social #WorldCleanupDay #greatbritishbeach #citizenscience
We've some Great British weather for the Great British Beach Clean! It might be blustery out there but we won't let that stop us, we'll be out there until 3:30 so grab your litter pickers and let's clear some rubbish!
Don't forget tomorrow afternoon it's the Great British Beach Clean for Charmouth, from 1:30-3:30pm! We want to see as many of you joining us as we can, let's keep our beaches clean and litter free! #beachclean #GreatBritishBeachClean
Here's one we found just a couple of days ago, with some worn ammonites around the edge there was a decent chance of more inside and it didn't disappoint!
It's another peaceful, beautiful morning down here in Charmouth. If you want somewhere calm and relaxing we can't think of many places better this time of year, especially with an amazing centre full of fossils nearby! 😉
Join us at the next Lyme Regis Museum talk! Warden Ali will be there on October 1st at 2:30pm for a talk on the spectacular history of our Centre!
We're just one week away from the Great British Beach Clean and we hope to see as many of you as we can down here to help! Join us on Saturday 19th at 1:30-3:30pm!
Its just over 2 weeks until this years Children's Fossil Competition Ends. We still have the 2025 winners on display in our Centre and if you want your fossil to be here next year then go to www.theetchescollection.org/fossil-comp to enter!
Teaching all about fossils this year in school but can't come down to find your own on our beaches? The next best thing to bring the fossils to life in the classroom are our fossil loan boxes! For more details check our website: charmouth.org/chcc/loan-bo...
In for their annual visit to our Centre and the Jurassic Coast, it's always fun getting to meet the next batch of palaeontology students from the University of Portsmouth. Even better when they've been out on the beach and have some finds to show off like this pristine coprolite!
A bit of a wetter fossil hunt this morning than we've been used to but it clearly helped! Plenty of ammonite finds out there today including this one covered in fossilised worm tubes! These would have been made as the ammonite shell sat on the Jurassic sea floor.
Join us for the Great British Beach Clean on 19th September at 1.30pm! Help us to clean #Charmouth beach and sort the rubbish into recyclables. We are recording rubbish for #citizenscience Equipment is provided on a first come, first serve basis! #MarineMonday
