In a new editor’s note added to a paper reporting preclinical studies of a gene-editing treatment that resulted in the death of a Chinese girl, Nature has flagged “concerns” that have emerged about the publication. scim.ag/4vHdfYp

Russell Vought is working to advance a key part of his Project 2025 agenda by giving political appointees unprecedented authority over federal science funding decisions. Fight back by leaving your public comment by visiting this link: zurl.co/hdmlB Article: zurl.co/ijSUz
Trump administration proposal would all but end scientific merit in grant funding, critics say
Proposed in late May, the rule would give political appointees unprecedented control over federal grants for research, education and infrastructure.

Hey science types! OMB has a proposed rule, OMB-2026-0034, which would be terrible for scientific funding. The comment period closes on Monday 7/13 - if you can, leave a comment opposing it. Here’s some info: elizabethginexi.substack.com/p/what-we-ne... #chemsky

Today, ACS submitted its formal comment to the Office of Management and Budget, urging the preservation of merit-based review, scientific collaboration, and stable grant administration. Read the full comment: buff.ly/yWNWcw3
Personally I find it way too poetically appropriate that the Trump administration has corrupted a national memorial in away that has tainted the very concept of reflection.
A 20 year study on 2 NIH diversity programs in Science Advances shows they doubled undergrads' odds of getting a Ph.D. That is, before the funding for those programs and for the study itself was terminated last year: www.statnews.com/2026/06/17/n...
NIH diversity programs doubled undergraduates’ odds of getting a Ph.D., 20-year study finds
A new study found that two diversity-oriented programs supported by the NIH doubled the odds that an undergraduate would earn a Ph.D.

I've received advice like "if you do your best science, everything will turn out fine", which to a large extent is true in the past, when science has strong bipartisan support for decades. Nowadays, we can't just do science, but we also have to advocate for science.
OK guys, today stories are circulating (via professional societies) that the administration has leaked that they will retaliate against scientists who public comment. a) you can comment anonymously b) comments are protected speech c) die on your feet or live on your knees
We gotta at least try to do something about Russell Vought's Project 2025 OMB ruling:
Russell Vought, Director of the OMB, has issued a set of proposed changes that would dramatically alter federal grant funding. However, we can each take action to prevent these from taking effect. Here's how, a 🧵 🧪 1/n www.science.org/content/arti...

Sen. Andy Kim: "It's a choice. Delaney Hall is run by GEO Group. GEO Group is getting a nearly $1 billion contract to run Delaney Hall. They tell me there is one full-time doctor for 800 detainees. They could have more doctors if they wanted to, but that's cutting into their profits."
Several people have asked for possible content and structure for comments regarding the proposed OMB regulations. With some suggestions from others, I have posted on example (as a Word document) for downloading). jeremymberg.github.io/jeremyberg.g... I hope this is helpful.

In this newsletter I outline important actions to take. 1. Submit a comment opposing the rule change. 2. Contact state legislators to ensure states are engaged with the impact at the state and local level. 3. Contact members of Congress. 4. Spread awareness. This rundown is a great source:

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.
