2026 watch #163 - Amelie (2001). Delightful, whimsical if slight movie about an introvert who has no problems connecting to everyone in her community except the man she likes. Maybe this is what isolation looked like in 2001. Great twist, sweet but inevitable ending, it's a Sunday film. #filmsky

2026 watch #162 - Spontaneous (2020). For almost an hour this is a smartly written and executed story about the expendability of America’s youth. But when the best scenes are those where the kids explode, you have a problem with your gun violence metaphor. Then it gets full bore serious. #filmsky

2026 watch #160 - Memories of Murder (2003). Bong Joon-ho’s gripping true-crime detective thriller stands alongside his Oscar-winning masterpiece, Parasite. It balances a dark, high-stakes script packed with horror and action with an unexpected streak of comedy. Imagine Se7en had jokes. 😳

2026 watch #156 - Halloween (1978). Carpenter brings all the best horror elements together to launch the suburban slasher. One thing always bothers me: streets are awful quiet for Halloween, even kids at Myers house aren’t trick-or-treating. But I’m nitpicking, it’s a near perfect slasher. #filmsky

2026 watch #155 - My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999). Lesser known Studio Ghibli directed by lesser known co-founder Isao Takahata - due to his films being more adult-orientated and less fantastical. Yamadas is a film full of whimsical vignettes about everyday life… and it’s hilarious. #filmsky

2026 watch #154 - The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). A couple of good songs, the cast have a blast, Susan Sarandon is in a bra for 90 minutes… but horrible sets, professor is a dud, and a terrible final act with songs to pad. Tim Curry’s Frank-n-Furter is Rocky Horror’s everything. #filmsky

Faultless flawless Spacek but from the lingering gratuitous full frontal shots of supposed 16-yr-old girls to a terrible Travolta to a knife that spins gleefully in the air there are too many moments in this DePalma adaptation of Stephen King that don’t work #filmsky

2026 watch #152 - Rolling Thunder (1977). Reliably informed by Tarantino in his book that this is a cut above your average satisfying 70’s revenge bloodbath. Can’t say I’ve seen that many, but it has a solid cast (including a fresh-faced Tommy Lee Jones) and a well-paced story. #filmsky

2026 watch #151 - Dead Poet’s Society (1989). In ‘86 Robin Williams is making Club Paradise. Then he strides into his wonderful earnest stage with Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poet’s, Awakenings, The Fisher King. A 5 star rewatch with a young cast that were also going places in their careers. #filmsky

2026 watch #150 - Tusk (2014). For an hour this is a solid Kevin Smith joint, both funny and disturbing. Justin Long and Michael Parks are perfectly cast as the twatty podcaster and the warped killer. Then Depp joins the fray and something of an indulgence happens that derails the film. #filmsky

2026 watch #149 - Shanghai Surprise (1986). Not sure what possessed me to watch this horror. Nothing redeemable about it - it doesn’t even feature a Madonna song, just terrible George Harrison ones. This could have killed Sean Penn’s career before it got started, not sure how it didn’t. #filmsky

2026 watch #148 - Clue (1985). Timeless classic and multiple rewatch. If you haven’t seen it, it has almost as many jokes as Airplane or Naked Gun, a stellar cast, and a performance from Tim Curry that is second only to Frank-n-Furter. DO NOT STOP as the credits are about to roll!

2026 watch #147 - Say Anything (1989). Famous for its ghetto blaster scene, which is far from the best scene and isn’t that impactful. John Cusack reminds me of a present day Chalamet, star power in buckets without needing the jock gene. Ione Skye also great. Bad dad b-story is just weird. #filmsky
