My big artist advice of the day is: 1. Don't be a asshole 2. Be vocal when you enjoy the work of another artist. Share it. The whole "only promote your own work" stance feels corpo. 3. You're an artist, not an entertainer. Your "style" is what you think is cool, not what has the most mass appeal.
Normalize letting your friends know when they are doing something shitty. Being told you have done something wrong and having discussions about it is part of a good relationship. If you don't feel safe enough to have those type of conversations with that friend, maybe step back and assess why.
