Flaneur, ranter, humanist, raconteur, photographer, and general bon viveur. Scotland mainly, sometimes London. Posts are strictly personal, and have no bearing on my professional roles in English language teaching and teacher education.

Just got back from two weeks of work in Iraq. Met folk with severe trauma. I've been many times, but always fall into some sort of reflective maelstrom when I get home. Does my work make a positive impact on that fragile society? I work in education so of course it does. Am I right?

Although most of my adult life has been in London I'm now in rural Scotland much of the time. When in London I'm now a kid in a sweet shop. Do kids still go to sweet shops. Maybe all we have now are those American Candy places that make my headache.

It's quite nice here isn't it. Like the debating society in a liberal arts college, with leafy grounds. Well-behaved folk enjoy gin with their friends and putting the world to rights. How long until a fight breaks out I wonder.

First post. One of the reasons I live in the middle of a field in Scotland is that I don't like people very much. In particular those who eat hot fast food in trains. My only neighbour is even more misanthropic than I am. Having said that I absolutely believe in humanity's ability to achieve things.
