If you close language departments, remove opportunities for languages GCSEs and A Levels, and make it harder for students to spend a year abroad, you limit connections, deny young people the chance to broaden their world, and lose the stories and adventures that only another language can create.

Life without another language is like a hallway of unopened doors, a room full of people eager to meet, a monochrome world waiting for colour, a story that's missing a satisfying plot twist. Learn another language, and suddenly the doors don't just open. The whole world is waiting on the other side.

Congratulations to everyone receiving GCSE languages results today! You haven't just passed an exam. You've opened a door to other cultures, outlooks and possibilities. You've gained a skill that connects you with other people and places. Keep going. Your language journey is just beginning.

If you've received your languages A Level results today, congratulations! You've unlocked another world. You've gained an edge in multiple fields. You can communicate, negotiate and elaborate across borders. You can make connections where others can't. Your options are endless.

Spanish might unlock Portuguese or Italian. French could inspire Romanian or Catalan. English is a few steps away from German, Dutch or Swedish. Chinese, Farsi or Arabic make more sense when you've learned another language. Your world will grow when you discover a new language, and your mind opens.

I chose languages at school just because I enjoyed them. I didn't imagine then that they'd shape my career, take me across Europe, introduce lifelong friends or transform how I see the world. Whatever your age, it's never too late to start. Another language can change your life. It changed mine.

I look forward to a time when English students are proud to learn another language; when learning another language is a step into an exciting new world; when being "good at languages" is not unusual or elitist. Because languages are for everyone, in everything, and everyone enjoys the benefits.

When I chose German at school, I had no idea it would be a giant leap on a journey that would lead to countless other languages, unforgettable experiences and a career I genuinely love. Languages may not be "easy", but they will change your life. German changed the course of mine.

Languages have taken me from classrooms to conversations, from textbooks to friendships, from uncertainty to belonging. Each language has opened a different window onto the world. You don't need to be scared of making mistakes or not finding the best words. Your first words will take you a long way.

From Spanish, French, German, Italian and Latin at school to Albanian, Basque, Farsi and Mandarin, every language has given me something priceless: new people, new cultures and new ways of seeing the world.
