This smokey morning goat and farm cats.

Ready for breakfast, my overfed farm cats (they're not doing their job catching mice, lately) and one of the goats (also waiting for breakfast).
Distant fires are still sending lots of smoke our way. Not fun but at least the fires are still distant.

The hills (eastern side of the property) have cleared a bit. One of the benefits of living on the coast is that now we get a breeze from the ocean for our west side #sunset

The smoke that came over the eastern hills earlier is now being pushed back a bit by the ocean breeze at sunset.

One of the goats wonders, too... and like me, the goats have been through many fire seasons. None of us enjoy it.
Things are tolerable for the moment but we have an air quality alert and it will probably get worse before it gets better. Mostly, I hope fires don't spread to our location; they're causing enough death and destruction as it is. Thanks a lot, climate change-deniers.

Breakfast and The Color of Climate Change.... Farm cats and goats at breakfast, 4 August 2026, in a haze of wildfire smoke.

Photographed the morning of 4 August 2026: Smoke from distant wildfires colors everything with the shade of its destruction as two goats and assorted farm cat try to settle in for breakfast.
The animals probably aren't worried, although the air state might affect them to a degree, as it causes the occasional coughing and gagging fit for me. The fires are distant, for now, but the impact spreads far and wide.
I can't help but contemplate the uncounted thousands of sentient beings who have suffered and died already, with more to come. Our collective callous indifference haunts me.

This afternoon's snacking couple: Blackbirds, of the Red-winged variety, mostly ignoring the patrolling Steller's Jay who has just zoomed by. #birds #naturephotography

Two Red-winged blackbirds enjoying a snack, as I had nothing to feed them earlier in the day so now we are making up for it. The male tries to look tough as a Steller's Jay zooms by. Jays are much bigger birds, or high intelligence. Which is why they might decide to avoid direct confrontations because what the blackbirds lack in size, they compensate with honey badger-like toughness.

Photographed the morning of 31 July 2026, northern Oregon coast. A morning breakfast buffet mix of birds of different feathers, as they say. Immigrant Eurasian Collared Doves are joined by native Stellar's Jay and continent-spanning Red-Winged Blackbirds. A lesson in tolerance.

Waiting for me on a sunny morning, a farm cat and a couple of goats really have nothing better to do. This is my reason for getting out of bed in the morning.

Repositioning for breakfast, more farm cats and goat. I probably overfeed them.

I used to tell my sister Judy that she was going to make them fat and lazy. Now I do that.

Morning after the storm and we're all still here.

Post-Elida, it stayed offshore and only hit us with 24 hours of thunder and lightning. We lost electricity a few times and the animals took refuge in their safe places, but no fires started in this area. Others may not have been so lucky. I don't know.

Bodhi cat likes to sit and think about things. Sometimes I disturb his thought process. I warned him that deep thoughts lead only to an existential crisis. He doesn't listen.
