“Human progress isn’t measured by industry. It’s measured by the value you place on a life. An unimportant life. A life without privilege. The boy who died on the river, that boy's value is your value. That's what defines an age. That's what defines a species." - The 12th Doctor, "Thin Ice"

HBO has released the trailer for the new Harry Potter series. I don't care how much you loved HP 20 years ago. Do. Not. Watch. This. Trailer. And DO. NOT. WATCH. THE. SHOW. Watching these only feeds Rowling's funds with which she oppresses Trans people.
Just saw Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Have to say, I think it might have displaced Spider-Man 2 as my favorite movie with the wall crawler. Not sure if I want to do a full blog about it, but damn. Such great characterizations and an interesting plot.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: “We’re Gonna Win in the End!”
In 1985, Mattel introduced a new toy line spinning off from its incredibly popular He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The new line featured the long-lost twin sister of series protagonist He-Man. The new series, She-Ra: Princess of Power, aimed its sights on girls who might have liked Masters of the Universe but wanted a role model of their own.

I just finished my first watch-through of Netflix's 2018 animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. That might be the best-plotted, best-acted, best animated animated series I've ever seen. The themes of love, redemption, and what it means to be a hero are so perfectly done. I may blog it.
So, I think I'm back. I was pissed about having to rustle up a VPN and didn't care to give BlueSky my business because of it. Anyway, blah blah blah, fuck Texas, blah blah blah.

The Odyssey: “Treat others as you wish to be treated.”
"Treat others how you wish to be treated," is a sentiment repeated throughout Christopher Nolan's epic, The Odyssey. Based on the epic poem attributed to the poet Homer (who may not even have existed), Nolan's Odyssey takes plenty of modern liberties with the source material. The Greeks speak in modern speech, using colloquialisms such as "dad," "daddy." and "f**k." The costumes are gorgeous but likely inaccurate to the time period in many cases.

Fuck Texas for making me invest in a VPN. I should probably have gotten one sooner, but the point is I shouldn't have to disclose "age-verification data" to an untrustworthy third-party vendor just to access social media. #ginafortexas #talaricofortexas

“I have the power!” Masters of the Universe (2026)
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is one of the first cartoons I remember watching as a child. It was formative to my expectations of both science fiction and fantasy, because it was both blended perfectly for 4-year-old me. Unfortunately, the old cartoon doesn't really hold up these days. Even 20 years ago, I tried watching the Best of He-Man…

As an avid Stargate fan, I hate to say it, but these fans are idiots. I get wanting to see the story continue, but really, it had kind of played out by the end. I want to see the concept treated in a fresh, new way if it has to be brought back.

Sci-fi fans everywhere were left devastated when news of the Amazon MGM Studios reboot of Stargate was canceled with no warning.

Gods forbid we raise workers who are able to communicate and work with a culture that isn't white , straight, male, and Texan. Fuck. The GOP.
New from Miranda Williamson: In order to receive accreditation, social work programs must ensure students become "culturally competent." That means these programs are some of the last vestiges of so-called "DEI" in Texas universities. Some Republicans want to change that.

Looper: No Fate but What We Make for Ourselves
This weekend, I watched what I now consider the best time travel movie I have ever seen, Rian Johnson's critically acclaimed Looper. Starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, and several other notable actors, Looper is the tale of Joe, a special kind of temporal hitman for the mob. When Joe in 2044 finds himself face to face with his future self, he faces an impossible choice: kill his future self, or let him get away and face torture and death in the here and now.
