25 years ago today, I was working at UofL. My pager went off several times. It was my mom, worried about my daughter who was at a federal daycare center downtown while Dean was a prosecutor in the US Attorney's Office.

One of the highlights of my year is helping present the Gold Standard of Optimal Aging Awards, celebrating the remarkable older adults who serve as pillars of our community.

For families at last night’s town hall impacted by the recent mapping changes, this is about so much more than lines on a map. One young student’s shirt put it best: “my school shouldn’t change because a map did.” I’m grateful for everyone who showed up, and those I’ve met while knocking doors.

The words of Wendell Berry have shaped how Kentucky sees itself and how the world sees Kentucky. During a recent gathering overlooking the Ohio River, I noticed one of his poems in a frame, and a portion stuck with me:

Our stories connect us across generations, and listening to incredible storytellers, poets, and performers like Bob Fortunato at the Corn Island Storytelling Festival is a reminder of the rich history and traditions that bring our community together.

While speaking at yesterday’s annual meeting of the Kentucky Medical Association, I reminded colleagues from across the Commonwealth that as physicians, we know listening isn’t a courtesy. It’s part of the job.

Residents and families in all neighborhoods impacted by this announcement deserve better than confusion, uncertainty, and potentially changing school systems only months before an election, and after years living in their communities.

I’ve spent my career supporting seniors like Rachele Guernsey, the first recipient of our UofL Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging in 2011! This week, I was overjoyed to spend time with her (96 years young!) and her neighbors at the Brownsboro Park Retirement Community Health Fair.
