Deeply amazed by freshwater fish, cichlids in particular

No two Paratilapia have the same spot pattern, like finger prints, the size, color and distribution of blotches is unique to the individual. The pattern changes with age. Paratilapia is the least understood genus in the cichlid world, posing a steep learning curve but so rewarding to see fully grown

Brightly colored male Ptychochromis grandidieri aka East coast gold Ptycho. Reaching well over 12 inches, the species is capable of tolerating varying degrees of salinity up to full salt water. Likely to be one of a handful species of cichlids from Madagascar that may survive humans

We live in St Paul, Minnesota; TONIGHT reports coming from multiple sources that ICE is staging in our grocery store’s old parking lot, going door to door in adjacent neighborhoods weapons drawn. At this point the Civil War movie seems more reality, and current events are the fiction. SMH.

Ptychochromis insolitus is a nearly extinct cichlid from Madagascar. Its appearance is reminiscent of prehistoric fish, itself having not evolved an immune system capable of mounting immunity against ichthyophthirius. Adult males develop a beautiful blue body sheen with bright red fins.

Just a reminder, wild places and wildlife are fragile. Paretroplus dambabe unknown to most people is extinct in it’s native home of Madagascar

Males of Pachypanchax patriciae showing beautiful red and blue coloration. Endemic to Madagascar northwest coast, the genus does best in cool temperatures as sex determination is temperature dependent

What a wonderful visit to the @college-de-france.fr! Thank you Denis Duboule and the faculty of the Collège. A fabulous month of science, ideas, conversation and, of course, Paris. Catch my four lectures here: www.college-de-france.fr/fr/agenda/co... 🧪

Was truly a must to have @neilshubin.bsky.social visiting for a month as a guest Prof. @college-de-france.fr, spending time with colleagues, with lab members 👍 and delivering a superb series of 4 talks (see below)🙏. This is what science is about. I’ll miss the morning coffees ☕️🤘

With a new Paretroplus species described in the damii group (Paretroplus risengi), it’s imperative to keep declining species from becoming altogether extinct #dtmf

The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has undergone some dramatic upgrades to their freshwater and marine tanks. It is an even more amazing place to visit- obviously their Madagascar collection could be bigger 🥲

Years ago, 20 yrs, I had no clue these fish would be endangered or extinct. What does it mean to you to go through generational amnesia and forget what used to exist?
