Deeply amazed by freshwater fish, cichlids in particular
Will AI made videos replace what people share? No doubt visits to public aquaria will continue to inspire young conservationists
No two Paratilapia have the same spot pattern, like finger prints, the size, color and distribution of blotches is unique to the individual. The pattern changes with age. Paratilapia is the least understood genus in the cichlid world, posing a steep learning curve but so rewarding to see fully grown

I was sent a stack of these many years ago by @drandrewthaler.bsky.social, going to figure out how to give them away in coordination with donations to www.standwithminnesota.com Standby👍

Brightly colored male Ptychochromis grandidieri aka East coast gold Ptycho. Reaching well over 12 inches, the species is capable of tolerating varying degrees of salinity up to full salt water. Likely to be one of a handful species of cichlids from Madagascar that may survive humans

Sorry not sorry. Gars and Minnesotans WILL outlast ICE👍 *sound, on NSFW 🎥remixed from TJ Jaskowski
HYPOTHETICAL: water balloons filled with gar slime would be VERY unpleasant 🤔 COINCIDENTAL, unrelated: terrorist agents have been seen staging next to campus. bsky.app/profile/solo...
Time to start collecting all that gar slime! #GarLab https://t.co/ekpkmDUUjZ
It’s A LOT right now. I needed to take a breath, maybe you do too? Perhaps with some of my favorite fishes, right here in Minnesota:
We live in St Paul, Minnesota; TONIGHT reports coming from multiple sources that ICE is staging in our grocery store’s old parking lot, going door to door in adjacent neighborhoods weapons drawn. At this point the Civil War movie seems more reality, and current events are the fiction. SMH.
Ptychochromis insolitus is a nearly extinct cichlid from Madagascar. Its appearance is reminiscent of prehistoric fish, itself having not evolved an immune system capable of mounting immunity against ichthyophthirius. Adult males develop a beautiful blue body sheen with bright red fins.
West Texas storm chaser Laura Rowe captured the picture of a lifetime, a fantastic shot of a mature supercell thunderstorm illuminated at varying heights by the setting sun.
Extinction rarely departs with drama, it slips out the back door while we’re still debating the guest list. These records are made official on the Red List. "Conservation failures are often recognised only once they can no longer be reversed." via @mongabay.com: news.mongabay.com/short-articl...
Just a reminder, wild places and wildlife are fragile. Paretroplus dambabe unknown to most people is extinct in it’s native home of Madagascar

Males of Pachypanchax patriciae showing beautiful red and blue coloration. Endemic to Madagascar northwest coast, the genus does best in cool temperatures as sex determination is temperature dependent
What a wonderful visit to the @college-de-france.fr! Thank you Denis Duboule and the faculty of the Collège. A fabulous month of science, ideas, conversation and, of course, Paris. Catch my four lectures here: www.college-de-france.fr/fr/agenda/co... 🧪

An eagle’s eye view of Paretroplus maculatus showing intense red eye coloring- the black blotch intensifies with age
Juvenile Etroplus canarensis are the ultimate curious and gorgeous small cichlid ever 🙌🏼😍
With a new Paretroplus species described in the damii group (Paretroplus risengi), it’s imperative to keep declining species from becoming altogether extinct #dtmf
The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has undergone some dramatic upgrades to their freshwater and marine tanks. It is an even more amazing place to visit- obviously their Madagascar collection could be bigger 🥲
Years ago, 20 yrs, I had no clue these fish would be endangered or extinct. What does it mean to you to go through generational amnesia and forget what used to exist?
