Once more I was up in Castlemaine today to watch Letty Lynton, a Joan Crawford film finally freed from 90 years of copyright purgatory and back on the big screen and let me tell you THE COSTUMES! JOAN’S EYEBROWS! THE DELICIOUS PRE-CODE ENDING OF GETTING OFF SCOT FREE! WHATTA PICTURE!

Joan Crawford in THE Letty Lynton dress that apparently caused a frenzy of millions of copies being produced. It’s a big, white, fluffy organza number with huge layered puffy sleeves and sheer layers of skirts ending in undulating ruffles.Joan in a gold lamé number and a tiny tilted black cloche hat sitting and looking miserable as Nils Asther leans over from behind and clutches her by the upper arms because he’s a CAD who WON’T LEAVE HER ALONE! There is a bottle of champagne in a bucket in a little sidetable next to Joan that may well become a vehicle for MURDER.Robert Montgomery and Joan Crawford flop about each other in a promotional still for Letty Lynton. I’m mainly including this one for Joan’s boat-themed costume, which has rather big nautical bunting flags around the neckline. She does indeed wear this dress on a boat in the film.
