coop, he knew what he needed to do. The black snake was a sign of
bad luck until it was dealt with, and he was just the one to deal
with it. His hands were long and clever, and he held the snake
between them, with his fingers working over its scales as though to
soothe it, even though it was dead. The black snake had lived in the
soil underneath the chicken coop and kept the pests away, the rats
that might have eaten their chickens up. He hadn’t given it a name,
but it had been a neighbor and it deserved a good place to lay with
the last rays of the sun still in the sky.

The last rays of sunshine still linger over the garden as I clutch onto my skirts and haste across the lawn. And just as the sun sets I sink onto my knees before the statue of Inessa, folding my hands as I throw a last glance over my shoulder for any of my sisters. Then I purse my lips as I wait for the words to come, my head bowed in prayer.
“Dear Inessa,” I start, and shudder at the sound of my own voice in the empty air. “Please don’t send me into a loveless marriage. I don’t want a life at court and I don’t want to meet a supposed soulmate today, so if you could just call it off an make sure it doesn’t—”
“I knew I saw someone lurking around the corner.”
I yelp as I spin around, fall over and scrape my palms on the cobblestone.
A masculine chuckle chimes as I push away the curtain of hair before my eyes, my face heating with every note.
“My apologies, I never meant to scare you, I simply saw someone rush by and had to know if I was missing out on anything.” His cerulean doublet becomes unmistakable as he offers his hand and pulls me up before I can protest, or run away, or fall into an endless hole somewhere in the the earth.
“You’re here with the Cordellian prince, aren’t you?” The words stumble out of my mouth. He looks even better up close—sea blue eyes with a circle of green near the pupils that sparkle with life and firm hands around mine, speckled with sunspots and veins.
His eyebrows knit together for a moment. “I guess you could say that.”
I pull my hands from his and tuck them away behind my back. Manicured hedges shield us from spectators, but with him here who knows where the prince might follow.
“Now what are you doing here, alone on the ground?” he says with a boyish grin.
I bob my mouth open and closed like a fish, stepping in front of the statue of Inessa like it’ll shield the tall marble from view. “Touching the grass?”
“Touching the grass?” His brows furrow in disbelief.
