Of course in many towns they are also the largest (or close to) employers- not just academics, but all the support staff, catering staff, cleaning staff. All of those thousands of people loosing their jobs would have a huge knock on effect on local economies

Our washing machine started burning last week so we had to get a new one. Husband is *so excited* to use the new one. So now, laundry is his job and he's thrilled. If I knew it was that easy, i'da broken the damn thing years ago 🙄

It is wild to me how many people there are who are doing "dream" jobs like being a writer, a lawyer, a professor - vocations that require a lot of luck & personal investment to get into, and which have 100s of would-bes for every actual success - who hate their job & want a machine to do it instead

I try not to harbor resentment or regret that my academic training did not lead to a faculty position, but I always feel a little twinge when this comes up. Because it reminds me that I really liked teaching, reading, writing, and even service. It can feel like the jobs go to people who don't.

There’s a point in every enterprising graduate student’s life when he or she realizes that a lot of the senior academics hate reading and writing. As in, they chose a career defined by written communication and they are livid to discover that they’ll be expected to conform. Blows your mind.

I'm a precariously employed academic with 2 teaching only jobs, one a zero hours contract. I publish because I want a better job, but I do so on my own, with no support network. It sucks. But I've just seen my work referenced in a book, and it's almost worth the shitness.
