Six months ago. The regime is clarifying its shape now. It is a distinctive American fascism, without a deep cultural myth to draw upon, and so evangelical Christianity becomes the myth that propels it. The constitutional order is dead. Which does not mean we surrender.

I would argue this is one of the most important academic works to understand what is happening in America now. It's not the economy... It's the power of myth and narrative, specifically the one tackled in this book.

That basic problem -- the problem of the information environment, which I've banged on about for 20+ years now -- is upstream of *everything* else. There's no simple fix. It's certainly not going to be fixed with clever word choice or policy proposals. You have to shift the deep mythologies.
It's really, genuinely difficult to put yourself in the headspace of the average disconnected, not-paying-attention voter if you know things. It's notoriously difficult for people who know about things to imagine the world from the perspective of people who don't!
