We're an independent scientific project tracking government climate action, measuring it against the Paris Agreement aim of "holding warming well below 2°C, and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C."
For the 1st time, #China is structurally cutting emissions across power, transport, and heavy industry. major challenges remain: a coal-chemical boom and 291 GW of planned coal capacity keep China off a 1.5°C pathway. Our rating: Highly insufficient. 🔴 climateactiontracker.org/countries/ch...
🇧🇷 Brazil’s overall CAT rating of its #ClimateAction has worsened from “Insufficient” to “Highly Insufficient.” Continued expansion of oil and fossil gas production, directly contradicts both Brazil’s climate leadership ambitions. New country summary: climateactiontracker.org/countries/br...

As it stands, #COP31 host Türkiye’s climate ambitions and policy actions are not 1.5°C compatible, with the gap between its targets and a Paris-compatible pathway set to widen from 2030 to 2035. Here, we analyse Its 2035 NDC. bit.ly/CAT_TUR_2035...
Earlier this week, we launched our new #Article6 Assessment series, in which we provide qualitative assessments of carbon credit arrangements under Article 6. Today, we are taking a closer look at one of the four countries we have assessed: Brazil. ⬇️

Three major energy shocks in a decade, yet many governments still treat #FossilFuel volatility as a temporary disruption. Dependence on fossil fuels leaves countries exposed to geopolitical turmoil and price shocks. As Bill Hare notes, the #ClimateCrisis remains the larger existential risk.
1/ Yesterday at #SB64 in Bonn, we presented our new briefing, “Never let an energy crisis go to waste.” @niklashoehne.bsky.social from @newclimate.bsky.social explains: “But this crisis is significantly different. Energy technologies are now cost-competitive, and scaling at exponential speed [...]
1/ The US–Israel war on Iran has once again put #EnergySecurity at the centre of geopolitical tensions. It is the third major shock to the global energy system this decade, exposing the vulnerabilities of fossil fuel-dependent economies. But this crisis is different.
📢 The #SB64 climate talks started in Bonn this week, and we are releasing a new briefing that examines how countries have responded to the energy crisis. Join our press conference - or watch it online. 📅 11 June 2026 🕒 15:00–15:30 CEST More info: climateactiontracker.org/blog/press-c...

Saudi Arabia’s latest climate pledge is once again undermined by a lack of transparency. It provides no 2035 emissions reduction target, and the 2040 target is tied to an unspecified baseline projection, making ambition and progress impossible to measure.
Nigeria submitted its 2035 NDC in September 2025: it is 1.5°C aligned, representing a high level of ambition. However, Nigeria's current policies are projected to significantly increase emissions, which conflicts with the new targets.
Again, India chooses a more polluting, expensive solution to its heat-related electricity crisis - more fossil fuels. It would be better off putting this cash into renewables & grid stabilisation instead of fuelling the #climate crisis bringing the heatwaves. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
India Allocates $4 Billion to Support Converting Coal to Gas
India launched a 375 billion rupees ($3.9 billion) plan to boost the industrial conversion of coal into synthetic gas, in a bid to reduce import dependence and shore up foreign exchange.

Last month, the International Maritime Organization (imohq.bsky.social) held its Environment Committee meeting, where member states agreed to preserve the Net-Zero Framework (NZF) as the central basis for negotiations on decarbonizing #InternationalShipping.
How are war and #climatechange reshaping Russia’s energy landscape? In the podcast “Energy Evolution” by S&P Global, CAT researcher Eoin Quill puts Russia’s greenhouse gas emissions into a global context. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: www.spglobal.com/energy/en/ne...
Colombia’s 2035 #ClimateTarget sends mixed signals on ambition. While the country has reaffirmed its 2030 commitment & introduced a slightly lower emissions target for 2035, the bigger picture is concerning: progress is not keeping pace with what’s needed for a 1.5°C pathway.
UN Climate Week 3 (CW3) is wrapping up & we are highlighting progress countries in the region are making on #ClimateAction. Today’s spotlight: Viet Nam. Despite lacking ambition in climate targets, momentum is building for deeper #RenewableEnergy integration & a coal phase-out.
Who’s transitioning away from fossil fuels – and who’s doubling down? Ahead of #TAFF, we look at attending countries: from standout renewable growth in Chile to continued fossil export reliance elsewhere. Read the full analysis 👉 climateactiontracker.org/blog/fossil-...
ANALYSIS: The upcoming Intl Maritime Org will discuss the Net Zero Framework that, if passed, will be a major milestone in decarbonising intl shipping, introducing a global fuel emissions standard & a market-based mechanism to reduce the sector’s emissions 🔗 climateactiontracker.org/blog/rescuin...

Peru’s latest #NDC marks a step backwards on ambition. The country submitted a conditional NDC target for 2035 at the same emissions level as its 2030 target, which was already not aligned with 1.5°C, in either 2030 or 2035. 🚨 A clear lack of progression. climateactiontracker.org/countries/pe...
The impact of the Iran war has shown how reliant economies still are on #fossilfuels. The @theguardian.com has examined 10 countries most responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. They are splitting into 2 camps: 🔹doubling down on fossil fuels 🔹accelerating toward low-carbon futures
Kenya is a bold leader in East Africa on #climateaction. 90% of its electricity is generated from #renewables, and it continues to implement green policies across the economy. However, its success has been something of a double-edged sword. bit.ly/CAT_KEN
🇮🇳 India’s updated green strategy through 2035 adopts a cautious stance on pollution reduction and #fossilfuel dependence, raising concerns about limited progress in the decade ahead.
PRESS RELEASE: India is likely to be able to achieve its newly-announced 2035 target - to increase its non-fossil capacity to 60% - by, or even before, 2030 under the policies it already has in place. Emissions will continue rising. climateactiontracker.org/press/india-...

Germany’s latest emissions projections, presented on March 12, raise serious concerns about the country’s climate trajectory. If the EU wants a chance of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and staying on track with the 1.5°C limit, it needs to ramp up ambition: it needs to at least ensure its 2040 target of 90% net reductions is reached domestically and ideally increase it to 95% 🔗 climateactiontracker.org/press/respon...
China released its 15th Five-Year Plan (FYP). The plan reinforces the rapid expansion of clean energy, but it does not translate this momentum into stronger binding emissions targets. Read our full reaction here 🔗 climateactiontracker.org/press/reacti...
