All hope is not lost when it comes to the decline of coral reefs due to mass coral bleaching events. This is because scientists recently discovered over 64,000 square miles (nearly a third of the world’s reef systems) of coral reefs they believe can withstand future warming.

When Tropical Cyclones (TCs) recurve up the East Coast, the heaviest rainfall doesn’t always fall under the storm’s main rain shield. Sometimes, it shows up well ahead of the storm, in a completely separate location. This is called a Predecessor Rainfall Event (PRE), first defined by Cote (2007).

While attribution science doesn’t tell us whether an event would or would not have happened in a world without human-caused warming, it does tell us how much more severe the event was because of climate change. For example, multiple attribution studies were conducted after Hurricane Helene in 2024.

The first week of May is Air Quality Awareness Week (AQAW)! Each year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shares different air quality topics to teach people how to prepare for poor air quality events. The EPA will share a new topic related to air quality each day of the week.

The US Forest Service was first established in 1905 and has since grown to steward over 150 national forests and 20 national grasslands totaling over 190 million acres. When we think of national forests, we often think of recreation: hiking, exploring, camping, picnicking, and so much more.

Given the widespread consequences of increasing global surface air temperatures, a better understanding of relationships and linkages between regions on Earth such as the Arctic and midlatitudes can help to improve our predictability of costly extreme events.

One of the most commonly used graphics when a Hurricane is threatening an area is the NHC Track Cone (aka The Cone of Uncertainty). Even though it is widely used, it is widely misunderstood. The cone only shows the possible paths of the storm center.

The Climate Consensus Fun Fact Friday. Post shows the NHC forecast cone with the added inland tropical storm and depression warnings outside of the cone.

Satellites are crucial for scientific study in the Antarctic because the environment there is not only inhospitable to human life, but it is also very difficult to get there. This means the amount of research that can be conducted onsite is limited.
