Cllr Usaama Kaweesa

@cllrkaweesa.bsky.social

Proud Labour and Co-Operative Party Councillor for Cricket Green Ward | Cabinet Member for Children's Services in Merton | Chair of Governors at Haslemere School.

The best part of last week’s visit to Downing Street was seeing the young people from the Patchwork Foundation ask questions and make the most of the chance to speak with and learn from very senior civil servants. I hope they came away knowing they belong in places like that. #GetInvolved

Through the #Mitcham Town Community Trust, which brings our local schools together, and SHINE Saturday School, Kristina’s given so many young people chances they might not otherwise have had. Thank you, Kristina. We’ll miss you, but I’m glad you’ll still be part of SHINE and the Green Arts Centre.

Every child growing up in #Merton deserves to have a fun childhood, whatever their family’s circumstances. As Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, one of my absolute priorities is making sure cost is never the reason a child misses out. Thank you to Devina for raising this very important issue.

Where you start in life doesn’t have to determine where you end up. I know that from my own journey. That’s why Angela Rayner and Kwajo’s stories really resonate with me. Both took their own lived experiences and used them to fight for change for others. If we can make a difference, why not you?

This summer I had the privilege of seeing our free Holiday Activities and Food programme in action at Sherwood School. Proud that as a Labour council we can provide opportunities like this for our families who need them most. Huge thanks to Jack Lonergan Foundation and everyone making it possible!

#Merton’s got Pride 🏳️‍🌈 Loved being part of it and volunteering alongside so many brilliant people. Huge thanks to Merton Plus, my Merton Labour colleagues and especially Councillor Harry Platts for making it all such a successful. Can’t wait for next year!

Days like this are why I love #Merton. Really enjoyed volunteering at Pride today. A huge thank you to Merton Plus, my fellow Councillor colleague Harry Platts and everyone who worked so hard to make it such a brilliant and uplifting day for our community 🏳️‍🌈

A big thanks to Sean McInnes Sports Coaching for welcoming Councillor Harry Platts and me to Bond Primary School and giving us a great insight into your summer programme. Thank you for everything you’re doing to make sure our children have a fun, safe and active summer, even in this hot weather ⚽️

Such a brilliant day celebrating our fathers and their children! A huge thank you to Caleb and all the amazing Stand Up Fathers volunteers who helped make the Fathers Funday happen and created such a positive day for our families and community 💜 #Mitcham

Really pleased to see applications open again for the Boosting Middle Leaders programme. I got so much from it, not just the learning but the people I met along the way. It’s an experience I’m still drawing on today. Can’t recommend it highly enough to my fellow Councillor and Officer colleagues.

Happy National Play Day! It was great to celebrate the success of our Best Start Family Hubs today and show our local families just how much support is available for them and their children, because every child here in #Merton deserves the very best start in life.

A big thank you to Commonside Trust for everything you do for our community, and to our #Merton Council Family Hubs team for being there to help families access advice and support when they need it most. It’s always great to see our families coming together on fun days like today. #Mitcham

A week after the devastating fire at Belgrave Walk, we brought our residents together with the London Fire Brigade and Clarion Housing to provide updates and ensure everyone knew where to get support. Recovery doesn’t end when the fire is out, and we’ll continue to stand by our affected residents.

It meant a lot to return to City Year, having once sat where this year’s graduates were. My year of service set me on a path of public service which has taken me further than I ever imagined. I’m so proud of the difference they’ve also made, and I’m rooting for their next steps. Future’s bright.
