Abstract
In this paper, we introduce and study AD-logic, i.e., a system of (hybrid) modal logic that can be used to reason about Aristotelian diagrams. The language of AD-logic, ℒ𝐴𝐷, is interpreted on a kind of birelational Kripke frames, which we call “AD-frames”. We establish a sound and strongly complete axiomatization for AD-logic, and prove that there exists a bijection between finite Aristotelian diagrams (up to Aristotelian isomorphism) and finite AD-frames (up to modal isomorphism). We then show how AD-logic can express several major insights about Aristotelian diagrams; for example, for every well-known Aristotelian family A, we exhibit a formula 𝜒𝐴∈ℒ𝐴𝐷 and show that an Aristotelian diagram D belongs to the family A iff 𝜒𝐴 is validated by D (when the latter is viewed as an AD-frame). Finally, we show that AD-logic itself gives rise to new and interesting Aristotelian diagrams, and we reflect on their profoundly peculiar status.

Abstract

Philosophy is a subject in many nations’ secondary education, taking very different shapes across countries or regions. A country like Italy, for example, offers a historic overview of philosophical ideas, whereas a region like Western Australia focuses mainly on the training of philosophical skills. There have barely been any comparative studies regarding the curricula (the documents containing learning outcomes) of philosophy education on a large international scale. Karen Van den Bosch and Griet Galle have created a framework that allows the comparison of these philosophy curricula in general, upper secondary education across Europe, North and South America, and Australia. In the second of two seminars, we will present the framework we have developed, and we will discuss the results of the application of this framework to the curricula of fourteen countries/regions: UK (excluding Scotland), France, Nordrhein-Westfalen (Germany), Austria, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Ukraine, Norway, Chile, Bolivia, Ontario (Canada), Western Australia, and Victoria (Australia). This seminar will be understandable for those who did not attend the previous one.
