OTD 1996: Chilean striker Marcelo Salas made his River Plate debut. 'El Matador' became a fan favourite at El Monumental, scoring 48 goals in 110 games over two spells. Salas, now 51, is now president of home town club Deportes Temuco, where he played in their academy (1989-'91)

Alongside Cruyff at Ajax and Barça, there was this guy. Johan Neeskens. A name that fondly lives on in Dutch footballing legend. Today would have been Johan's birthday.

Iceland aren't known for prolifically producing top level footballer, but it's fair to say that they did with this guy. Plying his trade at a whopping 16 clubs across 10 countries, it's fair to day that this Icelandic journeyman was very Guð(johnsen)...

A man who's name is pretty synonymous with Bayern Munich, Franz Beckenbauer helped them win many trophies in his time there which was the majority of his career. Today we can look back at his career on what would have been his birthday today.
