This panel shows a figure with a human body and the features of a rat, which is one of the signs of the Asian zodiac, and is likely one of 12 granite panels from a royal tomb. It is probably from Gyeongju—the capital of the kingdoms of the Old Shilla (57 BC–AD 668) and Unified Shilla (688–935) periods—where large royal tomb mounds can still be found. This panel resembles those showing the animal signs of the Korean zodiac from the tomb of General Kim Yusin (595–673) in Gyeongju, the most famous tomb of the period.

In the early Joseon period, paintings of scholar-officials’ gatherings (<em>gyehoedo</em>) gained popularity among the Korean elite. This painting was commissioned by Sim Eongwang, an official of the Joseon court, to depict a <em>miwon gyehoedo</em>, a gathering of cabinet members (<em>saganwon</em>). This meeting is assumed to have been ordered around the time when Sim was the head of the saganwon in 1530. At the bottom of the painting, he added his poem to express a "literati respect for high spirituality," as stated in the first line. The poem was later recorded in his anthology titled <em>Eochonjip</em> (Book of Fisher Village).

Cho Hyun-myeong from Punhyang Cho Family https://clevelandart.org/art/1999.15.1

These two portraits are of members of the Cho family, which originated from the area of Punhyang. Cho Jae-ho (1702-1762) on the left is the cousin of Cho Hyun-myeong on the right. Both were High State Councilors, called yeong-uijeong, and the Cho family ordered these two portraits as a family honor. Korean portraits were copied for sharing at each family Confucian ritual; similar portraits are still in the collection of the Cho family in Korea.

Epitaph Plaques for Yi Gi-ha https://clevelandart.org/art/1998.291.1

Epitaphs chronicling the birthday, origins, and achievements of a deceased person were written on plaques of white porcelain and placed in the tomb of the deceased. The tablets varied in number, depending on the importance of the person. Epitaph plaques such as these were written in Han Chinese script. Although Korean script, or Hangul, had been invented by the time that these plaques were created, Korean script was then considered too common for important communications and Han Chinese script continued to be used for official and ritualistic documents. One edge of each tablet is numbered, and the opposite side notes that there are a total of 18 in this set. It is the epitaph of Yi Giha (Korean, 1646-1718) who was a military court official in the middle of Joseon period.

This whimsical bottle is classified as <em>Buncheong</em> 분청 (literally, powdered green). Flourishing during the 1400s–1500s, Buncheong indicates pottery with iron-rich clay decorated with white slip. After firing, the color of the clay body usually became greenish-gray due to its high iron content. Korean artists tried to emulate the white porcelain wares of the Chinese Ming period, although the result was not the same. On the surface coated with white slip, the image of a smiling fish is carved in bold lines, a technique distinctive to Jeolla province, a southwest region of the Korean peninsula.
