🚨New Paper! In the study championed by Janina Pykäri, they quantified biotic carbon stocks across trophic levels in the shallow littoral zone. For example, they found that most carbon in the studied soft-sediment habitats was bound in vegetation and infauna. 👉Read more doi.org/10.1016/j.ma...

🚨New publication on carbon stocks in reed beds! M Williamson et al. quantified C storage in reed stems, roots and sediment. 🌍 Most C was stored in the sediments and roots, and the highest total C storage was observed in the intermittent zone of the reed beds. 👉 Read more: doi.org/10.5194/bg-2...

New publication!🌥️ Maija Peltola et al. have measured new particle formation and aerosol properties at the CoastClim coastal atmospheric observatory. The fascinating results showed e.g. new particle formation at the coast occurred roughly as often as in a boreal forest. 👉 doi.org/10.5194/acp-...

Catharina Uth will defend the doctoral dissertation entitled "The role of phytoplankton biodiversity in coastal organic carbon dynamics” on 19.12.2025 at 13:00 at Tvärminne Zoological Station. The dissertation is available in electronic form in Helda: hdl.handle.net/10138/603732 Link to stream!👇

🚨 New publication! Federica Manca et al's network analyses show that marine macrophyte-animal associations can be highly structured and they are not random assemblages. Additionally, the key species bladderwrack is again showing how important it is! 👉 Read more: doi.org/10.3354/meps...

Congratulations to Janina Pykäri for her award for the best presentation by an early-career researcher at the Baltic Sea Science Congress in Sopot! 🎉 Well done on disseminating the important work on the role of the seafloor animals in the carbon systems!

🚨 New Publication!! 🚨 The study by @cmgustafsson.bsky.social and collaborators from UWA found that the main biodiversity mechanism driving seagrass biomass stock is through dominance and co-existing species that show similarity in their functional traits.

Functional traits are moderate predictors of above‐ and below‐ground biomass in multispecies seagrass habitats
