Don't walk, but RUN to your closest cemetery to unearth a copy of @woodenvelt.bsky.social 's novel Thief of Death! Combining the odd-couple romance of T Kingfisher with the respect for the dead of Katherine Addison's Cemeteries of Amalo, it's a pleasure from the graveyard meet-cute to the end!
Chugata plays a spear- throwing game like badminton. Narakal plays stones and counters reasonably well, which are a bit like chess. The Tsin play a similar game much more seriously to teach kids military tactics, which is why Ysel is beating Narakal in the picture below! ##OctoberWorldbuilders
Hey there, #OctoberWorldbuilders! We're starting a new week, this one dedicated to sports and games within our fictional worlds! Do you have any characters who play a sport or game? Do they play professionally or just as a hobby?
The Akapana's oldest mud-brick temples are little more than crumbling hills from outside, but the rooms inside are so well-preserved temple priests take school trips there every year to teach kids about the bad old days. Tenan isn't Akapana and he's NOT in his comfort zone. #OctoberWorldbuilders
Good morning, #OctoberWorldbuilders! Thanks to all of you who have been patient while I spend some much-needed time off social media. I hope the prompts have been useful for creating your desert! Today: talk about its geology, rocks, or maybe some ruins. Whatcha got in your fantastical desert?👀
The Akapana live in a desert where it very rarely rains, so they're used to preserving water. They have much more of a problem with rain, which overwhelms their canals and reservoirs, ruins their fields and melts their mud-brick houses. Thanks for the prompt! #OctoberWorldbuilders
#OctoberWorldbuilders, hello friends! Alright, it's time for the survival question I promised a few days ago! Tell me how the people who live in your desert actually survive in it. How do they get food and water? What kind of clothes do they wear? How do they stay warm/cool otherwise?
It would have to be Jesper Kyd for his work on the first AC soundtrack, specifically City of Jerusalem. Thanks for the prompt! share.google/Jq1ZspAjE6Rj... #LitHodgepodge

#LitHodgepodge 9 Imagine your book is being adapted for TV/film. Who is your dream musical collaborator to compose the score or record the theme song? Choose based on the right vibes for your WIP, your favorite artist, or whatever criteria tickles your fancy. #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Writing Brian Jacques fanfic when I was twelve because it always pissed me off how all the weasels were evil! And badgers are omnivores so like how does that even work? Anyway I like weasels? #pretendpanel
#pretendpanel Loved everyone's answers last weekend! Tell me more about how you got to this point (though maybe just the elevator pitch so we're not here all day) 🤭 9th October: What was your origin story/the spark that ignited your writing? #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
50 word fantasy, listen They approached the decaying giant cautiously as any fallen beast, staring at their reflections in its glazed eyes. Cathay stroked the monster's rusted shell and paused. "Listen!"
Glad you asked! The Akapan began as a small coastal settlement by a natural spring. They worshipped an earth god. Then invaders came and brought their spider god. They built canals and farmed. Many civil wars later, the two gods live in harmony. (Then the wind nation attack) #OctoberWorldbuilders
Hello, #OctoberWorldbuilders! Tell me about some of the deeper lore of your desert. What myths, legends, religious stories, folklore, etc. do you got? What stories do people tell about this land or about something in it? Or what do they believe in general about their world?
Akapana deserts have many specialised plants that my characters don't know the name of, but they're famously full of cacti and not much else. Their seas are incredibly rich. (Here is a map) #OctoberWorldbuilders
#OctoberWorldbuilders, hello friends! Tell me about the flora and fauna in your desert. What lives there? Also, it doesn't strictly have to be "flora" or "fauna." If you've got something that defies these terms, but still count as living, by all means talk about them!
Thr Akapana build all their structures from adobe bricks, ranging ftom impressive stepped pyramid-temples to one room huts. This causes problems when a rival god causes floods... (Another picture) #pretendpanel
Good morning, #OctoberWorldbuilders! Let's talk about buildings in our desert societies. What is the architecture like? How do they keep their homes warm/cool as needed?
The Akapana worship the gods of earth and water that make their desert city viable. They have a caste based society with fishers, farmers, artisans, warriors, priests and leaders. They trade by rowing reed rafts north on the currents, then letting the winds carry them home. (A picture)
Hello there, #OctoberWorldbuilders friends! Let's talk about the societies that live in our fictional desert settings today! What are the lives of these people like? Remember there's a day about survival coming up, so save any answers about clothing or water until then!
Ooh, I missed this! And it's relevant to my WIP so here goes... Akapan is a coastal desert where it almost never rains! The cities depend on magical canals built by powerful gods. (Here is a picture of them)
Good morning! Welcome to a new month of worldbuilding prompts! Happy to be here and hosting #OctoberWorldbuilders! This first week is about DESERTS (that's the biome, not desserts the sweet treats, but feel free to talk about dessert today, too!) Tell me a little bit about a desert in your world👀
To prevent burnout in a demanding job. And because it brings me joy! My characters...not so much. #pretendpanel
Let’s kick off our #pretendpanel month of the deeper reasons why, with the big one… 2nd: Why do you write? #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
I love these! Thanks for the prompt. Sunbird: Two henchmen get divorced The Cactus and the Spider: Bronze Age professional with imposter syndrome navigates a workplace dispute.

50 word fantasy, detail “I should have used the fly-thru dragon wash!” the wizard complained. “In a century of dragon detailing I’ve never seen such a sad creature!” Hilda growled.
I haven't read it yet, but the premise for @woodenvelt.bsky.social 's novel Thief of Death sounds fab! Looking forward to reviewing! #pretendpanel
#pretendpanel , it's that time again. Thanks for joining me this month. See you again with a brand new theme in October. September 26th: Freebie Saturday - post anything! #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
Pretty conventionally, tbf, but the gods TALK LIKE THIS #pretendpanel
A bit of a change of speed today #pretendpanel - to cap off our month of questions around sound and audio, show me... September 25th: Snippet share - how do you depict sound and/or voice? #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
50 word fantasy, rear Clouds shredded as the pegasi soared around the skytrack, chasing a thousand-sequin prize. Alenthe sprang from Whirlwind and dived onto Blossom. Blossom reared and Alenthe clung on, but the faery beside her tumbled down through the clouds.
Akapana society is bi-normative, while the Tzin are very much not. Narakal, my Mc, has more relationships with men than women. People being people, many of the Tzin are interested in exploring Akapana mores. Once the two lands make peace, this causes a boom in erotic pottery sales.
Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters Happy Bisexual Visibility Day, everyone! 🩷💜💙 Do you have any bisexual characters? Please share them with me today! #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Apparently oysters are aphrodisiacs. Perhaps not this one. 😬
I don't listen to spoken word much but Paul Cooper of the Fall of Civ podcast (no link cos that's embarassing) has a very relaxing voice. Thanks for the prompt! #pretendpanel
#pretendpanel Now's the time to tell us (if you have this) one of your potentially most ridiculous ambitions... (who me?) September 18th: Dreamcast your audiobook/radio dramatisation. #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
Oh, for the love of god no! I have a very nasal Nottinghamshire accent. To myself. That's all. #pretendpanel
I wonder what the range of answers will look like today. Tell me, #pretendpanel ... September 19th: Have you ever read your work aloud? #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
50 word fantasy, calm The dragon snorted and exhaled calm. A soft blue haze enveloped the peasant army, a fragrant fog that turned the thoughts of the disheartened host to home and family as they realized their enemies were no different to themselves.
50 word fantasy, total Rie added up the total, keeping one eye on the queue. Every Empire adventurer paid tax by moonset on the month of the Infinite Serpent or faced the Imperial excisemen, assassins worse than monsters.
Audiobooks? They're neat, but I rarely get time to listen to them. The last one I listened to was Eagle of the Ninth, sixteen years ago, when I worked alone on a farm all day and watched black widow spiders crawl out the weed piles. Good times. #pretendpanel
#pretendpanel you can answer this as a reader/listener, writer, or both, but we will get more specific about audiobooks and your writing in the next question. September 11th: How do you feel about audiobooks? #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
