Free buses in Macc every Wednesday during the school holidays.

Just sent in a FoI to CE re any equality impact assessment for wheeliebins left on pavements by residents or the waste team. And if no EIA, how to get one done. It's bad enough now, but soon we'll have food caddies to trip over too.

Perhaps people will start walking instead of driving if they work locally. Perhaps then they’ll be inconvenienced by pavement parking? Perhaps they’ll change their behaviour when next parking? 🤞 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

FFS I thought we'd moved past the ignorance of illustrating stories about deadly heatwaves with photos of people frolicking at the beach/in lakes/in fountains. Heatwaves are the deadliest agents of climate change. They kill nearly half a million people each year, and that's only going to increase.

Extreme heat, deaths, damage to infrastructure, disruption. But Gatwick expansion is OK. Climate change? Hello.

Some drivers feel untouchable - soundproofed, tech-laden, insulated from the world outside. That isolation breeds complacency, while pedestrians and cyclists feel the danger every time these vehicles fly past. Drivers need to put safety before convenience and time saved.

Two CST members were declared Unsung Heroes at the Mayor’s Civic Award event. For working to remove many barriers blocking access for disabled people. Equal access helps pedestrians, wheelers and people on cycles (incl trikes, tandems and cargo bikes) travel sustainably. Tx for the recognition.

In January 2024, Bologna became the first major Italian city to implement a 30 km/h speed limit. Despite initial pushback, the "Città 30” initiative has delivered measurable improvements in road safety, public health, air/noise quality and travel behaviour—with no measurable impact on travel times.🧵

Hmm. If only there was a free transport mode teenagers could use that meant a 3 mile journey took 15 minutes instead of an hour. That if course depends if there is a safe cycle route. But cycling is so often ignored by people when it comes to transport options. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Just announced: free bus for children in August! From an early age children love singing "the wheels on the bus" but many never actually travel on a bus. Our experience is that kids love buses (and trains). If you are not a bus user, I urge you to take a child on a bus trip this August.

This bung is going to only save £60 a year for drivers but will cost tax-payers £2.4bn (yes BILLION). That's 16 times larger than the entire UK-government annual spend on cycling AND walking. Imagine the positive impact that you could make with £2.4bn spent on improving cycling and walking.

NHS staff and teachers are to get free bus travel and Park & Ride parking in Oxford, funded by the city congestion charge. The plans were agreed at today’s Oxfordshire County Council cabinet meeting, which heard that schools and hospitals accounted for 42% of workplace parking within the ring road.

@bikeabilityuk.bsky.social advice please. We want to organise a bike to school event (i.e. one/off bike bus) but all children must have helmets and high vis for insurance cover. Not all will have these but funders are saying no cos it’s up to parents to provide these (quoting the Highway Code)???

It's honestly wild that pedestrians - people mostly travelling entirely under their own steam - are almost always expected to travel significantly out of their way to accommodate the caprices of people using machines the whole purpose of which is to make it trivially easy to travel further.

In addition, there are now several studies showing that you also have to interrupt driving, and make it less easy. Because with the best will in the world, why would somebody who habitually gets in their car for every trip even notice a free bus, let alone make the effort to learn to use it?
