Happy 40th Anniversary to CASTLE IN THE SKY, the first Studio Ghibli film!
With stunning animation, heartfelt storytelling & thrilling action scenes, AVATAR AANG delivers. Great to see Team Avatar all grown up (without Suki sadly). Dumping it on streaming is a disgrace, it deserves to be seen in a theater. #AvatarAang
Joe Hisaishi at the Hollywood Bowl! Wonderful to hear his incredible film scores live, including his stunning work with Studio Ghibli! #JoeHisaishi

Mexico’s first stop-motion feature, I AM FRANKELDA, is now on Netflix. It’s a lavishly done musical period piece about a 19th century Mexican writer in the world of nightmares and fiction. I’ve another piece on the film coming, but for now my @variety.com review from last year at the link below.
The FIFA World Cup Cup kicks off today. I’ll be posting film recommendations based on the countries playing each match. All of them are available to stream/rent in the U.S. Here’s the first: Mexico: IDENTIFYING FEATURES 🇲🇽 vs. South Africa: THE WOUND 🇿🇦

WISHBONE is back in the news thanks to a new documentary that chronicles the making of the beloved ‘90s kid show. For LA Times I talked to the voice of Wishbone, the show’s creator, and the doc’s director. Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY is coming, but Wishbone did it first. Link below.

I’m speechless. Marjane Satrapi was such a gifted storyteller. Beyond her masterwork PERSEPOLIS, she made films like THE VOICES and CHICKEN WITH PLUMPS that were so specifically fantastical. Truly saddened by the news, but so thankful that I had the chance to interview her. RIP.
CUTTHROAT ISLAND at the Vista! Gorgeous 35mm, booming sound, pure pirate spectacle. Plays again tomorrow, as part of the “When Carolco Was King” series! #CutthroatIsland
SPIDER-NOIR is out this week on Prime. My interview with Nicolas Cage and Lamorne Morris is in print today on the cover of the LA Times’ Entertainment section. Cage’s love of film noir and Morris’ shoutout to journalists made for a really enjoyable piece to write. Link below.
THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 20 years ago today. It was the first, and so far only, Irish film to win the Palme 🇮🇪

I feel so lucky about this one. For the New York Times I profiled the legendary Tony Leung Chiu-wai, one of cinema’s most unforgettable talents. The piece includes input from directors John Woo and Ildikó Enyedi. Leung’s latest film SILENT FRIEND opens tomorrow. Link below.
Lucrecia Martel! My interview with the acclaimed Argentine filmmaker is in print today at LA Times. What an honor to have written this piece. Her new film, which is her first documentary OUR LAND (Nuestra tierra) opens in LA today. Read here: www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

Excited to share this piece! The heroines from KPOP DEMON HUNTERS have taken over kid birthday parties, displacing Disney princesses. For LA Times I talked to 2 LA characters-for-hire companies and to a parent still shocked by the movie’s popularity among children. Link below.
