once the war’s over, hubert, slowly but surely starts to give in to little pleasures, like lingering around the table after eating making idle chatter, spending more than five minutes in the baths, or kissing ferdinand just for the sake of kissing him, not just as a means to an end, unhurried

Hubert von Vestra was not a terribly good kisser. Ferdinand really should have been able to predict as much. She doubted the woman had had much practice before. Unfortunately, Ferdinand was discovering that she quite liked that. That she really liked that. Too much tongue by half. Too many teeth by even more. It felt like Hubert was trying to devour her mouth. Was it the enthusiasm she liked — the way Hubert lost herself to the feeling? The inexperience quieting whatever sliver of jealousy Hubert struck her chest with? A smug sense of superiority? Or just the way she seemed to improve as they went. The way Ferdinand got to feel Hubert adapt to her. Knowing that she would likely be the only person to ever see this exact side of Hubert.
