Receiving the award 🏆 gave me the chance to present my research and meet leading microbiome researchers in Austria. The discussions and networking made it an incredibly rewarding experience so early in my career. If you finished your MSc thesis in microbial research during the last year - Apply!📄
Shoutout to @cornelia-cr.bsky.social, our 2025 AMRA winner for Best MSc Thesis! She says: "If you’re an MSc student, apply for the AMRA! It was a unique experience to get feedback from the wider scientific community." 🎓Ready to showcase your work? Apply by May 31st www.microplanet.at/index.php/aw...
Do we still need journals to publish? Debate at #EGU26 Some control for quality, ethic and originality is needed. But trust is an issue. Anonymosity. Costs. Assessments. AI. Would a metric for peer-reviews help? Should we limit publications? How to read all? Too many questions for not enough time!
Kicked off #EGU26 yesterday with presenting my poster! Enjoyed so many great talks with people from various backgrounds. Thanks for your interest, questions and suggestions! Also great to meet many old friends and colleagues!
#EGU26 third poster sneak peek. Any guess what changes here? Come to X3.78 from 8.30 to 10.15 today and find out!

Permafrost heterogeneity drives soil OM and microbes! 🦠❄️ So happy the first paper of this project is out! Working on the pyrolysis and seq data was a huge part of my master's thesis. Greatful to be part of this project 😇 Stay tuned for more. doi.org/10.5194/bg-2...
Spatial heterogeneity of soil organic matter and microbial community composition across ice-wedge polygons and soil layers in Arctic lowland tundra
Abstract. Arctic lowland tundra is characterized by pronounced spatial heterogeneity that introduces uncertainty into predictions of permafrost soil carbon dynamics. In these ecosystems, edaphic varia...

Finally finished my poster for #EGU26 😇 Are you a fan of microbes and drought? 🦠☀️Then you need to get up early on Monday and visit me at X3.78 at 8:30 a.m. See you there!
Such a great evening! 😃 I really enjoyed my first public science communication event! Talking about the importance of soils, its animals, and the carbon cycle to kids, parents, and interested people. Hopefully sparked some interest and made clear that soil is no dirt. Also got great feedback!
After months of preparations - the Long Night of Research is happening today! 🤩 Our booth is all about soil and its hidden superheros and their superpowers 🌱🍂🦠🪱🍄🟫 Find out what soil is, who lives there, and why our lives depend on healthy soils. Visit us at UBB (Djerassiplatz 1, 1030) @univie.ac.at
Recap Week #12 2026: Started preparations for the Long Night of Research with some root boxes! Also: Spring 🌱 arrived in Vienna - apricots blooming 🌸, spinach growing, ladybugs 🐞 and sadly also blackflies are back...
Preparing science for the public isn't easy, especially for children. How much simplification? How many details? See if we found the right ⚖️ for our soil station 🌱🪱🦠🍄🟫 langenachtderforschung.at/station/3601 with @cemess.bsky.social @univie.ac.at
An u...

Finding your science story isn't easy. Had a great day discussing communication, storylines and hooks with trainer bweingartner.at at career development @univie.ac.at Why is it easier to find convincing stories, ABTs, and tips for other researchers than for yourself? 🤔

Week #11 2026: Week of many small tasks that have been accumulating 🫠 Also submitted final version of my PhD exposé; taught students some new methods; last of the professorship hearings at CeMESS; guided tours at UniVie observatory 🪐 and botanical garden 🪴🌵🌷; gardening & horses 🥰
You are joining #EGU26? You like soils, microbes 🦠 and global change? Then my poster is for you! Arrive early and visit me Monday morning (4th May) at X3.78 to discuss ecological memory to 17 years of recurrent drought.
Long Covid, Post Covid, ME/CFS, PEM, Pacing. So viele verwirrende Begriffe. So wenig Aufmerksamkeit für Betroffene. Schau doch dieses grandiose Video, um zu verstehen, dass diese Krankheit eben nicht "nur Erschöpfung" oder ein falsches Mindset ist. www.zdf.de/play/shows/m...
Long Covid & ME/CFS – Blackbox der Pandemie
Die Pandemie ist für die meisten vorbei, aber für über Hunderttausende in Deutschland ist sie es nicht. Sie leiden unter den Spätfolgen ihrer Corona-Infektion.

On this day my thoughts are with all people suffering from Long Covid, ME/CFS and other chronic diseases who, on top of being incomprehensibly ill, constantly face medical gaslighting, societal denial and bureaucratic barriers. I am incredibly lucky to have recovered. Are you healthy? - Be grateful!
Week #10 2026: Happy to share that my PhD Prelim was a success 🥳 Did a course on Social Media Content Creation at main university. Walk at Augarten (childhood memories! They cut my climbing tree 😭 and planted conifers?). Got ill with a weird cold. Picked up my citizen science bee hotel 😁🐝 Spring 🪻🌱

Growing fungi decompose faster when they die, while starved fungi form more recalcitrant necromass. Why? C:N ratio and b-glucan branching determine decay rates! 🍄🟫
Week #9 2026: My prelim prep stress was disrupted by our great PhD Retreat in Graz! Also met my two cousins in Graz 🥰 coffee and great conversation with one cousin, followed by an amazing city tour by the other cousin! Weekend spent with horses. First pic of me sitting on my rookie horse 🐎😍
Why do we only study soil CNP? This study shows the importance of K for root-associated AM fungi. Great work by my PhD colleague Kian Jenab 👏 @cemess.bsky.social @ter-cemess.bsky.social @univie.ac.at Let me know your thoughts on the diversity of soil nutrients in the comments! 🌱🦠

Great first day of our PhD Retreat in Graz with @microbesplanet.bsky.social and @seyens.bsky.social 🦠 Discussing effective visual communication 👀 and learning from our own mistakes on slides, figures and posters. My take-home is definitely to ask for more regular feedback from my peers!
On my way to Graz for PhD workshops on Visual Communication for Scientists 🎨📊 with @seyens.bsky.social and on Unconscious Bias, organised by @microbesplanet.bsky.social Looking forward to some great time with my fellow PhD students 😃
