I've never been hugely into Pokemon, Gen 1 is a bit nostalgic for me from my childhood. But anyway, between two nerd characters, the line was "How is my favorite filthy Magikarp?" and, I mean, even not being hugely into it, everyone knows Magikarp, except the caption writer, I suppose
Catmaid!! As a Jiangshi thing! It's been a long while, I don't draw Catmaid too much anymore but I love her deeply; she was sort of a launch platform for me to prove I could design appealing characters. I lack a lot of things other artists have but I pride myself on character recognisability.
