step nine. (the rain let up enough for me to get to my studio) The lower branch is defined and some adjustments to the bones color.
It was a rainy Monday in Witch City. My enthusiasm died as soon as I walked out the door...
Step eight. The middleground colors for the vines and tree limbs beging to get filled it.
Here is a movie of all the steps it took to do my painting "the green bench" in cold water encaustic using brushes and palette knives.
I try to never celebrate the death of another human being. However, there are exceptions....
An Oregon bow hunter was fatally gored while tracking a bull elk he had wounded with an arrow the previous day. The hunter returned the next morning to continue searching. When he found the bull still alive, the hunter attempted to shoot it again. The wounded elk charged and gored him in the neck.
I'm not the biggest fan of Modigliani...but I do enjoy saying his name.

This is step seven in this 36" x 60" painting. establishing the tone and value of the central figure is helpful in determining where the rest of the painting fits. (trying to explain how and what I do is harder than just doing it.)

"bullfighting" is an evil, senseless 'sport'. It breaks my heart to see animals treated with such cruelty.

I am utterly and completely tired of AI.
AlphaFold was always bait-and-switch; now Google confirms it. A hyper-narrow bioinformatrics model with actual science bolted on whose guesses can be experimentally checked was never a licence for socially-applied slop at scale, but it's done its job. Effort transferred to LLMs.
I'm always a bit reluctant to show my work process, however, I shall forge ahead. this is the sixth or so step in this 36" x 60" painting...putting the background in. necessary to establish overall tone and value.
I can't believe people still remember this episode.
This might be an anomaly.
this is just a concept sketch for what would have to be a much larger, more detailed piece. "rocks and rising bird bones" 7" x 10" pen and ink. yes, you can do loose drawings in pen and ink...(am I posting too much? probably.)
currently watching Nightwatch. (while I sketch) I love Russian horror films, the best are based on Russian folklore. (like my favorite, the Queen of Spades).
I found out this morning this painting (black candle moon) will also be added to the Peabody Essex Museum window display next month. (which gives me just barely enough time to varnish it)
step five (?) the charcoal drawing on the canvas. I use soft vine charcoal.
I sketch continuously, compulsively. doesn't everyone? computers and fountain pens.
