It’s a new month, which means it’s time for a new theme! For September, we’re diving into mythology and folklore in the collection, starting with this beautiful oil painting by Jennifer Trouton. 'Ariadne’s Thread' (2013) gets its title from the Ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur,

An oil on linen painting showing a spool of thread set on the floor in the foreground, in a patch of light. Behind the spool of thread is a wall with a patterned wallpaper, showing repeating images of a loom, cotton factory, and abandoned house. Hanging on the wall is a frame, the sides visible, but whatever is held in the frame is covered by a long cloth that drapes to the floor, ending just next to the spool of thread. The cool tones of the long cloth contrast with the warmer tones of the rest of the work, with the white thread in stark contrast to the wall, floor, and cloth.A zoomed-in look at the spool of thread the bottom of the cloth and all of its folds, and the patterned wall paper showing the tiny, intricate details of all of the elements of the painting.
