CRYPTID [krip-tid] (noun); a creature whose reported existence is unproved, such as Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster: the subject of cryptozoology. MYTHOLOGICAL [myth-uh-loj-i-kuhl] (adjective); 1) Of or relating to mythology. 2) Imaginary; fictitious.
#DOVERDEMON 17-year-old William Bartlett claimed that he saw a creature "about 4 feet tall with glowing orange eyes and no nose or mouth in a watermelon-shaped head" on top of a broken stone wall on Farm Street in Dover, Massachusetts. Two other eyewitnesses also claim to have seen the same thing.
#EMELANTOUKA A legendary semi-aquatic creature from the oral traditions of Central African Pygmy groups. Described as elephant-sized, brownish or greenish, featuring a single long, sharp horn on its snout, a heavy crocodile-like tail, and stout, stump-like legs. Famously aggressive and territorial.
#DOPPELGANGER A doppelganger is a paranormal double of a living person. They are viewed as an omen of impending death or severe misfortune. These entities are traditionally depicted as shadowless wraiths that may plant malicious ideas in their victim's mind or give misleading advice.
#NAGA Nāgas have human upper bodies and serpent lower halves. Rooted in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions across South and Southeast Asia, they are venerated as powerful, magical shape-shifters that guard subterranean kingdoms, hidden treasures, and vital water sources like rivers and rain.
#CIPACTLI In Aztec mythology, Cipactli is a primordial, insatiable sea monster with a mouth on every joint of its body. It was a hybrid of crocodilian, fish, and toad elements. The gods Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl ultimately sacrificed it, using its body to form the earth, heavens, and underworld.
#MERMAID Mermaid folklore spans thousands of years and crosses virtually every major culture. Far from the gentle, romanticized image personified by modern entertainment, traditional legends depict mermaids as complex, seductive and personifying the ocean's unpredictability.
#DJINN Djinn are supernatural beings from ancient Arabian mythology, composed of smokeless fire. Unlike modern, wish-granting "genie" tropes, traditional folklore portrays them as independent entities with free will, capable of choosing between good and evil, and sharing the earth alongside humans.
#NAIAD Ethereal female spirits who resided in fresh water, such as rivers, springs, lakes, and fountains. Tied directly to the bodies of water they inhabited, they were seen as life-nurturing protectors of nature, but also fiercely protective of their homes.
#POPELICKMONSTER The Pope Lick Monster is a cryptid from Louisville, Kentucky. According to local folklore, this part-man, part-goat creature dwells beneath the Pope Lick train trestle. Legends claim it uses hypnosis or mimics voices to lure trespassers into the path of oncoming trains.
#BEANNIGHE The Bean Nighe is a female spirit in Scottish folklore who acts as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. Often related to the Irish banshee, she is fated to wander lonely streams washing the bloodstained clothing or shrouds of those about to die.
#NOTDEER "Not Deer" is a popular modern internet cryptid and born around 2018. Despite being associated with Appalachian folklore, it is a piece of contemporary urban legend representing a deer-like creature with unsettling, unnatural, or supernatural features.
#BLUEMENOFTHEMINCH or "storm kelpies," are mythical, human-sized, blue-skinned creatures in Scottish folklore inhabiting the Minch strait. Known to cause shipwrecks, they swim with torsos raised, creating storms to destroy ships unless the captain can outwit them in a rhyming poetry contest.
#BUNYIP The bunyip is a feared creature from Australian Aboriginal folklore, believed to inhabit swamps, billabongs, and rivers. It is depicted as a dangerous, often predatory, water spirit that roars at night and attacks humans.
#WYVERNS A wyvern is a legendary winged reptilian creature, distinct from traditional dragons by having only two legs (often clawed like an eagle) and two wings, usually with a barbed or venomous, snake-like tail.
#NYMPHS Nymphs are nature deities in ancient Greek folklore, typically depicted as beautiful young women representing natural features. Unlike immortal gods, they are generally long-lived but mortal, often associated with fertility, healing, and specific locations, acting as guardians of nature.
#ANTARCTICLONGFINNEDWHALE The Antarctic Long-Finned Whale is an unconfirmed species of dark whale spotted in and around the world's southern oceans. Several reports of whales throughout the 19th and 20th centuries have been attributed to this species. Length estimates range between 20-30 feet.
#CACTUSCAT The cactus cat is a legendary critter from 19th-century American Southwest folklore, described as a bobcat-like creature covered in hair-like thorns with a branching, spined tail. It was said to cut cacti at night, return later to drink the fermented sap, and scream while intoxicated.
#BURRUNJOR The Burrunjor is a purported cryptid from Australian Aboriginal folklore and modern outback sightings, described as a 20–25 foot long, bipedal, reptilian, feathered, or scaly dinosaur, often resembling a Tyrannosaurus rex or theropod. Reportedly it is said to prey on cattle and kangaroos.
#BOOBRIE The boobrie is a mythological shapeshifting entity from Scottish folklore. It commonly adopts the appearance of a gigantic water bird resembling a cormorant or great northern diver, but it can also materialise in the form of various other mythological creatures such as a water bull.
#SHUNKAWARAKIN The Shunka Warak’in is a cryptid from late 19th-century folklore. Originating from Ioway language (meaning "carries off dogs"), it is described as a large, dark, wolf-like predator with high shoulders, a sloped back, and a vicious, hyena-like cry. It is known for killing livestock.
#COYOTE In Native folklore, Coyote is a trickster who plays tricks rooted in greed, hunger, curiosity, and ego. He deceives animals for food, disrupts social order, shape-shifts, and brings chaos. His actions often result in accidental blessings, such as bringing fire, or self-inflicted failures.
#ANDEANWOLF The Andean wolf, also known as Hagenbeck's wolf (Dasycyon hagenbecki), is described as a large, dark-furred wild dog with a long tail and powerful jaw. Reports suggest it inhabits high-altitude Andean regions, featuring in tales as a swift, formidable hunter.
#MISHIPESHU Mishipeshu is a powerful, feared, and respected underwater panther from Native American folklore in the Great Lakes region. Described as having a feline head, horns, scales, and a long tail, this creature guards copper, causes turbulent waters, and is believed to rule the deep.
#BASILISK A basilisk is a legendary reptile reputed to be a serpent king, who causes death to those who look into its eyes. The basilisk's weakness is the weasel. A basilisk's den is recognizable because some of the surrounding shrubs and grass have been scorched by its presence.
#ABBAGOOCHIE The Abbagoochie is a creature resembling a cross between an owl, a fox, and a deer. It is indigenous to Costa Rica, where people refer to it as a "dry land piranha" because it will eat anything, including creatures far larger than itself such as horses and cows.
#BABAYAGA is often depicted as a fearsome, cannibalistic witch who flies in a giant mortar, wields a pestle, and lives in a forest hut that moves on giant chicken legs. She embodies an ambiguous force, alternating between a villain who kidnaps children and a wise, magical helper who tests heroes.

#BLACKDEMONSHARK The Black Demon Shark, or El Demonio Negro in Spanish, is a prominent cryptid from the folklore of Mexico, particularly off the coast of the Baja California peninsula and in the Gulf of California. It's a fascinating blend of local legend and cryptozoological speculation.
