A close friend who’s transitioning came out to a group of other friends yesterday. They gave their new name. One person thanked them for sharing, another asked for forgiveness if they mess up the name, and then the conversation moved on normally. No one used their old name. This is as it should be.

ordinaryabundance.com This website is delightful; I’m so glad someone made it. Even the phrase “ordinary abundance” is meaty and instructive. Look around and enjoy. The beauty of normal things lies dormant without our imagination.
Ordinary Abundance
A walk through a modern apartment, through the eyes of the people for whom everything in it was new.

Blasting out Bad Religion in 1996 singing “The gray race shrivels / trapped inside / the world it creates is black and white” not understanding it was a forecast of our own generation 30 years later.
one of the reason gen z teens don't party like we used to is because their millennial and gen x parents are tracking their location 24/7
Editorialized unapologetically by yours truly.
President Barack Obama announced a new book podcast (remember when the guy in the White House could read?) that will include a review of Marilynne Robinson’s 2004 novel ‘Gilead’: gileadsociety.com/post/8247059...
GRR is unbeatable for a morning flight when you can start your day with a Madcap Coffee latte and a Nantucket Baking Co. scone before departure.
The phrase “late-stage capitalism” is a good tell that someone spends a little too much time on their phone.
FYI, as a poll worker here in Michigan: Stevens lost, and it’s not even close.
There’s a restaurant like this in Windsor, Ontario, just across the river from Detroit, called “Ukrainian Restaurant”. Run by a woman in her 90s who cooks everything in a small kitchen in the back. The dishes are kept in the cabinets along the wall. You pay in cash. She will not accept tips.
If you've been in the service you know that abroad a restaurant is often the front room of someone's house. The grandmother cooks; you're a guest of the family. Three Brothers in Milwaukee feels like that. The building is a beautiful old Schlitz tied house that the family has tended since the 50s.
I HAVE BEEN ASKING THIS QUESTION FOR YEARS AND NO ONE CAN ANSWER (seriously though).
enjoying imagining the discussion among editors in which they determined if this ought to be pluralized as Spider-Mans, Spider-Men, or Spiders-Man
The Detroit Tigers are playing some Excellent Baseball of late 👏 ⚾️
Tigers game starting during dinner and going past midnight for an extra-inning win >>>>>>>>
It was bold of FIFA to make the entire World Cup halftime show a 20-minute performance of Samba de Chocobo.
I really messed up by not getting an Argentina jersey in Buenos Aires a few weeks ago.
In his first-ever Major League at bat, the Tigers’ Eduardo Valencia of Valencia, Venezuela, lifts a home run to center field and lifts the hearts of a weary country 🫶 ⚾️
My anecdotal observation within the aviation community is that pilots of ICE missions (ex: those who fly for Avelo) are treated as outcasts.
Including for the pilots on ICE flights who knowingly operated unsafe aircraft. Every single ICE flight fails to meet FAA criteria for safe takeoff. Taking their airmen certificates away is the minimum.
I am pleased to inform you that my breakfast of gently scrambled eggs with crème fraiche and fresh chives from the garden with a side of sourdough avocado toast was exactly as perfect as it sounds.
This was expected. As long as he goes into Cooperstown wearing the Olde English D, it will have all been worth it ⚾️
Justin Verlander announced he will retire at season’s end:
At some point, people in the middle need to come to terms with the fact that Schumer is as responsible for all of this as Thomas and Alito.
To answer a bunch of questions we’ve been getting: Yes, we’re in New York. Yes, this was a pre-planned trip. Yes, we knew T was getting married here. No, that is not the only reason we’re here. Yes, we will be there tonight. No, we don’t expect to get to talk with her, there are 1,100 other guests.
“Separated by a few floors, and the veil between this world and what comes after it.” I hope you will take a minute to read this utterly beautiful memory by my friend @adamfpetty.bsky.social in memory of his brother, Tyler Petty: verydistantlands.substack.com/p/one-year-g...
One year gone
One year ago today, my brother Tyler died. He was forty years old. I was forty-three at the time. I’m forty-four now. He’s still forty.

New York City is one of my favorite places to travel to because it’s impossible to pack wrong. Forget something? Lost something? Need something? Just walk up the block.
