A close friend who’s transitioning came out to a group of other friends yesterday. They gave their new name. One person thanked them for sharing, another asked for forgiveness if they mess up the name, and then the conversation moved on normally. No one used their old name. This is as it should be.

There’s a restaurant like this in Windsor, Ontario, just across the river from Detroit, called “Ukrainian Restaurant”. Run by a woman in her 90s who cooks everything in a small kitchen in the back. The dishes are kept in the cabinets along the wall. You pay in cash. She will not accept tips.

If you've been in the service you know that abroad a restaurant is often the front room of someone's house. The grandmother cooks; you're a guest of the family. Three Brothers in Milwaukee feels like that. The building is a beautiful old Schlitz tied house that the family has tended since the 50s.

I am pleased to inform you that my breakfast of gently scrambled eggs with crème fraiche and fresh chives from the garden with a side of sourdough avocado toast was exactly as perfect as it sounds.

To answer a bunch of questions we’ve been getting: Yes, we’re in New York. Yes, this was a pre-planned trip. Yes, we knew T was getting married here. No, that is not the only reason we’re here. Yes, we will be there tonight. No, we don’t expect to get to talk with her, there are 1,100 other guests.

“Separated by a few floors, and the veil between this world and what comes after it.” I hope you will take a minute to read this utterly beautiful memory by my friend @adamfpetty.bsky.social in memory of his brother, Tyler Petty: verydistantlands.substack.com/p/one-year-g...

One year gone

One year ago today, my brother Tyler died. He was forty years old. I was forty-three at the time. I’m forty-four now. He’s still forty.
