According to Miyamoto, the emblem on Mario's hat was supposed to be an N for "Mr. Nintendo". Unfortunately, while he was designing Mario, he was using a permanent marker and sneezed while drawing, making it look closer to the letter M. "It was the worst mistake in my life, ever."

The developers of "Super Mario Bros." took a trip to Italy to better understand how to represent Italian culture in the game. This is how the 1985 game was able to represent such a broad culture so accurately.

"Five Nights at Freddy's" originally had an option to add warnings before jumpscares. They were removed as these warnings would consist of big bold red letters covering the screen and loud siren noises playing, resulting in more panic than the actual jumpscare.

Did you know? The student-made indie title "TAG: The Power of Paint" was originally titled "TAG: The Power of Portals." The team had apparently worked on this version of the game for months, until being informed by a professor that someone had beaten them to the punch.

Surrounding the release of Hatris (1990), Alexey Pajintov struggled to relay the mechanics of the game to interviewers. When asked about how to score points, Alexey said "That's what the hatris! That's what the point of the hatris." It's assumed this was broken in translation.

Pearl & Marina were originally based on rap-duo “Outkast”. The two met with Nintendo over the usage of their likeness, but the meeting ended abruptly due to a "bad fishing pun". André 3000 later stated in an interview “they wanted to call us ‘The Out-Casts.’ It made me sick.”

"Minecraft" takes its name from the game's primary two actions; Mining and Crafting. Previous concepts for the title explored different features found in the game, such as cooking, building, and more.

In the files of "Mario Vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis", an unused toy entity named "Mini-moto" was discovered. As most of the coding has been removed, it is currently unknown what the intentions of "Mini-moto" would be.

In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, despite an elder giving the player a silver sword for Hardin, he doesn't have a high enough sword level to use it. This foreshadows that his "sword" is too small, causing his wife to leave him, and causing the main conflict in FE: New Mystery.

Did you know? In 1996, SEGA was slated to make a Sonic and Garfield game for the SEGA 32X. However, they canceled the game due to the fact that the game's anniversary would eventually land on a Monday. One of the developers said "We absolutely cannot let this happen."

The indie game "unrailed!" (2020) involves 4 players trying to set up a train track for a moving train, collecting resources along the way to continue building. When a player completes the game for the first time, the menu’s title is changed to ‘railed!’ instead.

A Splatoon 2 developer had originally snuck in a "Slenderman" easter egg when the game first released. Since then, it has been removed, as the developer realized it may not appear to be "squid friendly" enough to those who don't understand it.

Did you know? The GameCube's prototype name was originally "Dolphin", but was quickly changed to the now-iconic name after Nintendo engineers dropped a Dolphin prototype into a pool during an investor’s meeting, and it didn't float.
