"The Great Hunt" I painted this as part of @paulscottcanavan.com "Mastering Imaginative Realism" mentorship. The brief was to design and illustrate a hunter and their animal companion embarking on The Great Hunt. I had a lot of fun designing this creature and painting a stern orc lady 👀💦
"At the Gates of Moria" I did this as part of Cynthia Sheppard's "Illustrating the Emotional Narrative" mentorship. This is the moment in Lord of the Rings where Sam is forced to leave Bill the Pony behind. It's always deeply affected me but I find this scene is rarely remembered.
Book rec! The Emotion Thesaurus is intended to help writers express characters' emotions in more sophisticated ways, but because many of these cues are visual, it's been extremely helpful for me as an illustrator for storytelling and brainstorming. Here's the spread for "disbelief" as an example.
"Treasure Island" I did this as part of Cynthia Sheppard's "Illustrating the Emotional Narrative" mentorship through SmartSchool. I've always been most fascinated by the ultimately doomed friendship between Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver. This piece takes place before Silver's plan is revealed.
"Somebirdy to Love" My goal for this piece was to design Harpies that looked like they could either have human or animal-level intelligence. And to draw monster girls having a cute moment :)
