There is a risk of severe storms developing later this afternoon and evening, with high winds, hail, and tornadoes all possible. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts, including alerts to your cell phone, local media, a NOAA Weather Radio, and outdoor warning sirens.

Dane County is under an Air Quality Advisory through at least noon on Thursday. Poor air quality can be hazardous to anyone. Before spending time outdoors, check the air quality forecast to ensure that you aren’t doing yourself more harm than good.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for southern Wisconsin for Tuesday at noon (12pm) to Wednesday at 8pm. Expect air temperatures in the mid-90s and heat indices in the upper 90s to low 100s both days, with the hottest conditions from 12pm-8pm each day.

Dane County is included in a Severe Thunderstorm Watch that will be in effect until 10pm Wednesday. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts. Be prepared to move quickly to shelter, especially if you have any outdoor activities planned this evening!

Outdoor workers can be at a higher risk from the effects of extreme heat. When working under hot conditions, drink plenty of water and take regular breaks in the shade or in a cool location. Be on the lookout for any signs of heat-related illnesses in yourself and others.

Never leave people or pets in parked, unattended vehicles! During extreme heat, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to dangerous levels. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. Look before you lock!

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Dane County and much of southern Wisconsin, from noon (12 p.m.) on Monday through Tuesday at 7 p.m. A Heat Warning means the area is expected to see dangerously hot conditions, with daytime heat index values up to 106.

Today is Lightning Safety Awareness Day in Wisconsin. Lighting can strike up to 10 miles away from a storm. When you see lightning or hear thunder, take shelter in an enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle with the windows up!

There are many reports of tree damage and downed power lines across Dane County, following a severe thunderstorm this afternoon that produced very strong winds. Report downed power lines and outages to your utility. Never go near power lines and stay clear of any debris they may be touching!

If you are heading out for the holiday weekend, make safety a part of your travel plans. Pack an emergency kit for your vehicle, check road conditions, and document your travel plans and make sure a family member or close friend knows where you are going and how to reach you.

Cell phones, weather radios, local media, and outdoor warning sirens are all great ways to get severe weather alerts, but you should never rely on a single source. Have multiple ways to know, especially late at night when you may be fast asleep!
