The more I think about this, the more annoyed I am. It isn’t the peer reviewer’s job to check references. The journal / publisher should be doing this. It isn’t hard, and the failure to check really reflects poorly on the journal as much as the author.

Quickest peer review ever. Done in 15 min. Found a fake reference. Went hunting, found one more. Straight reject. Advised the editor they should write to the author's head of school.
