in lieu of having hair that is bangs-compatible... what colour do I dye my hair this week? 🥲

I am forcing myself to Go Out and Do Things which is good for my dumb brain but in Berlin this means coming home with hair that reeks of smoke and this makes me sad when I get home 😭
I am a huge fan of distributed tracing, but whenever I look at tracing tooling that isn't Honeycomb, I do wonder why people who don't use honeycomb like it quite so much 😅
Sculpting really doesn’t come naturally to me, but I’m having a great time making silly weird cartoon animals to distract from ✨ life ✨
Soo uhh... Berlin friends... I need to drag myself outside more for things that aren't just glass... but I'm also too self conscious at the moment to pester people into hanging out... if anyone wants to catch up/hang out... it would be appreciated 😅 (would also happily take reccs for fun events)
Just tried riding a bike for the first time since I broke my shoulder and… it was very short but… my arm felt ok… But my whole body turned to jelly as if it was my first time riding a bike… definitely some 🧠 🐛 to fight…
It's Pride in Berlin this weekend and I'm reminded that although Berlin is a city that is so queer, but its community and events largely... kinda suck and I hate it. It's partially a function of the state of the world and being one of the most policed cities in Europe - but it still sucks.
“You have the tightest muscles I’ve ever felt” is truly a thing to hear from someone who has been a massage therapist for >20 years
My new hotshop hand torch arrived and I am so excited to hook this up and make some things 😅
www.usenix.org/system/files... Prequal seems like a (hard to do well) but really interesting approach to load balancing if your requests aren't super cheap - esp interested in the tail latency impact 👀

If my shoulder could remember how to externally rotate that would be very good plz because now my physio has me trying to force it and that isn't going great either
I can’t believe I’m linking to HBR, but if you manage (or have any leadership stake) in a larger team, you should read this. Knowledge, process, and quality delay is happening in more places than one might expect, and generally accelerating rather than being managed. hbr.org/2026/06/dont...
Don’t Let AI Slop Muck Up Your Company’s Processes
Generative AI’s gifts come with a hidden danger: decay in the accuracy and quality of organizational knowledge. This decay is the organization-level version of the “workslop” problem. When workslop…

Physio therapy is increasingly approaching “do 3-5 actual arm workouts a day” and its making things progress a lot faster but I am sure tired 😴
I’m still far from fully healed, but pushing myself to try new things and to get myself back to “normal”. I tried solid sculpting of glass for the first time and made my broken shoulder (it’s life sized!) based on the CT images. Need to give it a second try to refine it, but super happy with it
In good PT news I can actually raise my arm to 90 ish degrees unassisted outwards and forwards now In bad PT news doing so 15 times leaves me as out of breath as moving a 50kg box of raw glass does usually 🥲
Every time I add operational support code to a Rust codebase I'm forced to write far more brittle code than I'd expect if I want the code to be idiomatic :( partially because of how much relies on side-effects on Clone and other things that then make the borrow checker more enemy than friend :/
Dear bicep pls relax thx you are the last thing that seriously hurts and you’re making it hard to do PT 😭
Physio today was the “do the thing until it fails” kind of physio and I learnt new ways that muscles can hurt but the fact that I learnt them in the process of “lifting my arm” is scary actually. OTOH more progress which is good?
recovering from a broken shoulder is the most mentally exhausting thing i've ever done and the worst part is that even when things are "getting better" it still feels like you're _so_ far away from "better" :(
I've been using a computer for (1) day and already started writing a database i am sorry
Using a computer with two hands for the first time in a month and wow my hands forgot how to type this feels so weird
The more movement my arm gets back the more miserable 5+ more weeks of recovery feels tbqh 😓
It’s kinda weird how little pain my arm itself ends up in, unless actively doing physical therapy steps/reflexive stupidity (and those things spike to a 10, but for like… a split second), so relatively soon after surgery.
Really missing having two arms and being able to do things like “wash my own hair” 🙃 Instead I’m a cyborg with an upper arm full of titanium and a variety of medical advice from “do as much as you can” through to “move your arm wrong and your muscle will break the titanium pin”
Having surgery on my shoulder on Wednesday 😓 Not looking forward to having someone shove a giant nail into the ball of my shoulder 🙃
the thing nobody warns you about before you build a bunch of muscle is that you will be hungry all the time unless you have adhd and then you just forget to really eat properly until you faint
