What they’re forgetting is that dead, thin, dry wood burns. Wet, dense, living wood is harder to burn. Old living pine and house vs fire: house loses.

Aside from anything else ‘the privilege of being a nobody’ is such a wonderul way of saying that. My view is essentially memento mori, but for most, remembrance is more remote than for those with influence. All that can survive, are whispers of our presence.

Similarly, on the early release scheme and the welcome changes introduced by Burnham this morning. Concern over the exemption for murderers. Feature the mum of a toddler killed by her partner. Thing is, why are killers up for early release? Basic principle for capital crimes is life imprisonment.

It strikes me that the UK needs a similar site which tells you when you can post the truth about a recently deceased violent misogynist alcoholic. We'll call it HalfLife given the time lag.
We all go. Some will be remembered fondly. Others not. The rest will be remembered as a mixture, and forgotton quicker than we realize. That’s the way of things.

A side note to this bizarre occurrence is revealing the rank amateur nature of how universities hire (some) of their professors. Anyone who allowed this in secondary school teaching, the failures to do basic checks on references alone, would be swiftly and rightly fired.
